Oh man...I can't even vote. Two totally different monsters, and both do a great thing! But...the cleans and the dirty/clean sound on the Mark is better. The high gain channels though...The XXX is more of a crunchy, upper mid sound, while the Mark is more of a less crunchy, lower mid, total ballsy metal tone. Both are very articulate. I'd honestly be happy with either... that's a damned hard choice. If I really had a choice, budget not limited, I'd go with the Mark most likely, but I'd definitally need an OD pedal to add crunch when I wanted it. That, or an XXX with a V-Twin to run through when I wanted a Mark-ish sound.

But...go plug into one of um - not even a convincing post can save it.
Very present high-mids unsuported by a loose, saggy, spongy bottom end (think Grandma...) spells, well IMO, an unfocused high gain amplifier.

I don't find the bottom end on my XXX to be saggy or spongey at all, infact, they're very tight. You just have to use a proper speaker cabinet and speakers, stock Peavey cabinets sound like ass. To me it sounds like a 5150 but way more versatile and more chunk, and overall better sounding. Just a matter of personal taste.
XXX = more marshall-esque tones.

What a comparison Mark IV no contest!
The only minus point I can think up with the Mark IV is it's overly warm tone. I like a more balanced tone, so it does need tweaking. I just rather have a worldly harmonically rich Soldano/Framus Cobra tone: Set my favorite settings and kick anyone's arse with it. I would also be talking Bogner but I don't have the greens for 'em :smack: :blackeye:

they really are 2 different beasts
I'd say if you like warm chunk, go with the mark, but if you want a little more...buzzy sound i guess, check out a rectoverb

I voted XXX and I own one. Not much of a Mesa fan sorry, drop some good EL34's in and your are all set. Want it to be a bit more modern get a set of Svet 6L6, the stock ones are pretty poor. I also popped in a set of Ruby 12AX7's I got from Scott_F and that helped the cleans out quite a bit.
