Boogies are awesome, but if it were me, I'd take the XXX, simply because it's more "marshally" sounding. I played a Mark IV a long time ago, and it just didn't have that high end "sizzle" of a Marshall , 5150, XXX, VHT, or similar that I prefer...it's EQ'd a bit "flat".

Boogies are a completely different species, where as Marshalls and their copies are merely different breeds.
I like different aspects of the marshallish and mesaish tones... But in the end, I'll always be a mesa guy.

Of course that was my personal opinion..I know everyone has their likes and dislikes. To me the Boogie is just a super hot rodded fender with some tweaks...the same way a VHT is a hot rodded Marshall w/tweaks..and I prefer Marshalls over Fender

I know why some folks don't like the XXX (besides flat out prejudice of Peavey) but it is a very versatile amp and with a power tube swap it can walk on either side of the street, Mesa or Marshall. THe 6L6's give it more of a Mesa flavor and the EL34's more towards Marshall. Seriously though the stock tubes are pretty weak and an upgrade and a bias does wonders for the sound. They are biased fairly cold from the factory so you can tweak that pretty easily even before you change tubes. Learing to dial in the active EQ is a bit trickier than it initally seems, don't turn the dials up more than 12 o'clock position until you've played it a little bit. Then adjust them to taste otherwise you'll likely end up with far too much top end, at least from my experiance that is the case.

the mark iv for sure. it might not be the easiest amp to use but it has a load of killer tones from spanky clean to over the top crunch

Cool amp!, Never tried a mark IV but I love my mark III and IIC+!
If you're going to get a XXX for it's sound and three channels, get the new Joe Satch sig. amp instead.
It's like the XXX but more versatile. :bigok:

To me, the Mark IV is still the epitome of a versatile amp. It's a pain in the ass to go through all of the tones that it's capable of with the cascading-gain thing, but it's worth it, IMO. That amp has just about every tone in it, you just have to be willing to find it. It will take you time, but I think that it's worth it.

they really are 2 different beasts

I'd say if you like warm chunk, go with the mark, but if you want a little more...buzzy sound i guess, check out a rectoverb

Rectoverb?... buzzy?... first I've heard of it. I've never been able to pull anything but a fat, warm, and articulate gain out of mine. Maybe at bedroom levels, but that's all preamp without adding the power tubes and pushed speakers into the equation.

I don't find the bottom end on my XXX to be saggy or spongey at all, infact, they're very tight. You just have to use a proper speaker cabinet and speakers, stock Peavey cabinets sound like ass. To me it sounds like a 5150 but way more versatile and more chunk, and overall better sounding. Just a matter of personal taste.
XXX = more marshall-esque tones.
MKIV = It's a ****ing Mesa, eh?

i've herd him play it sounds pretty good.:headbang:

Mark IV all the way.

She is a pain in the arse to set-up, but sounds really good when you get the right setting. The speaker can also make a big difference in that amp, too.
