Puppets is my fave. I can listen to it end to end with no form of annoyance or boredom crossing my mind! The songs were all amazing, especially 'Master of Puppets', a masterpiece of a song in my opinion. I do not like the production of AJFA. sounds too ... i dunno... dry? dunno how to describe. Just lacked a fullness to its sound. The songs are killer though and 'To Live is to Die' is my fave 'tallica instrumental. Puppets my fave.

Master of puppets deffiantly was my favorite as well man, i just loved the solo to that song, i did everything i learned how to play it, it made me wanna buy the set up kirk hammet uses, that song formed my love for Metallica!! haha, but its all old metallica for me, i hate the new albums in my opinion they suck ass, i dont like St anger one bit, to me its not the same band anymore, if they went back to there old ways making songs awsome like they used to, they would prolly be one of the most popular bands

Re: whats so great bout master of puppets

Kill Em All is the best to me. Extremely raw and fast as crap. Playing the songs are so much fun cause there is easy riffs that are fun to play but the solo spots keep u really busy. They should have stayed on the music style of the first 3 albums cause I will say it and be very open.... METALLICA SUCKS !!!!!! anything from the black album up was so boring, where the amazing riffage and harmonies??? Oh and St. Anger is an excuse to shoot Metallica. What the crap were they thinking.

Re: whats so great bout master of puppets

The Puppets? No other album inspired me before or after to learn all the riffs and the whole album. Songs yes but whole albums never. When I finished school I just ran home put on them headphones started the tape and played along with the album round and round 'til falling asleep or totally thrashing my wrist. Never wondered why.

Great Album.....
I anlso think that AJFA was very dry and flat IMO,, Metallica said themselves that they didn't really like the final product, mainly because of the dryness...

Re: whats so great bout master of puppets

"What's so great about Master of Puppets!?"

Well, it was really a landmark metal album. I remember very well when it first came out. Right around the time it came out, "Fade to Black" was just starting to be played on the radio so people were getting to know who Metallica was. And in 1986 metal was really in it's infancy yet. In fact if you had to "chart" the history of metal with a bell graph, it'd start sometime in the late 60's with Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Then the curve would slowly rise up, then take a sharp upwards turn in the early 80's. I believe it's peak would be right around '86-'87 and slowly decline until early 90's Seattle scene when it would take a sharp plunge and never really recover...yet.

MOP was really the first album of it's kind in a lot of ways. It had a much heavier sound than Metallica's previous efforts and really helped establish a new metal standard. And unlike many of the "Spinal Tap-ish" themes that were popular in metal at the time, MOP tackled topics like cocaine addiction ("chop your breakfast on a mirror") and religion ("make a contribution and you'll get a better seat.")

Compositionally, Metallica proved they could do much more than just a quick, 3-chord speed metal tune. They experimented with various timing changes, extended songs, and insightful lyrics. "Disposable Heroes" proved they were professionals that had something worthwhile to say, "Orion" proved they knew how to play their instruments, and "Damage, Inc." said "oh...and we still do the speed metal better than anyone else!" Go ahead. Try and play "Damage, Inc." It's not as easy as it sounds.

It's easy to criticize MOP now almost 20 years later. AJFA offers a better heavy sound. So does King's X's Dogman. Compositionally, Dream Theater is much more complex. But none of these guys had anything to say in 1986. MOP was the ****. It's easy to improve upon something, it's much harder to be original. MOP was to metal what "The White Album" was to rock. What "The Joshua Tree" was to art-fag-college rock. What "Rising Force" was to shredders.

And almost 20 years later, if Master of Puppets came out today it would still sound fresh, interesting, heavy, and blow away any contemporary metal.

Thanks, y2stevo.

Hey, I see by your sig you're using an "Aria Strat Copy." Got any pics? Until recently I too was using an Aria Pro II Strat copy. Great guitar for the price.

Re: whats so great bout master of puppets

Any Metal Head knows why!! Need not ask!

FTR, AJFA kicks fukking ass too - this isn't a comparison thread, though!

To piss you off!

Anyway, as much as I agree with the statements about Load, Reload, and St. Anger, not so much with the word choice, try and stay open minded about what they tried. They're fukking Gods, I say let them do what they want and if you don't like it - tough. But for those who find its uniqueness over the first 5 albums as a plus - more power to you!

Re: whats so great bout master of puppets

I totally agree with Guitarist. Dude askin why master of puppets is so great is like askin why metal is so great. That album kicked my A$$ when i first heard it and still does. I banged my head so much to that album my neck was sore. From beginning to end that album slays. The crushing riffs and rapid fire solos simply amazing. James' voice also had a certain anger and attitude. The opening of Battery starts you with the clean intro and then goes full throttle into metal thrashing madness(Orion is an amazing instrumental) till Damage Inc. ends. One of my faves is leper messiah. Anyway thats just my 2 cents.

Keep it Metal :headbang:

Re: whats so great bout master of puppets
