Whats the difference between coil splitting and coil tapping?

I have a 2003 Highway1 Tele and would like to change out the noisie
pickups. Would like to use a hotrail on the bridge and either split it or tap it
using a push push volume knob.
Need to know also will the push/push fit without cutting out the body and what pot to use 250 or 500.

I don't think tapping a hot rail is possible without a rewind- It's just a 2nd lead that 'taps' the pickup at a point where there are less windings makign it a less resistance pup-

Splitting on the other hand is cutting off one of the 2 coils for a more single pup sound, but defeats hum removal- Good diagrams on the SD site-

A wonderful comprimise is called spin a spilt and also on SD site- Very easy to use and allows you to turn down the 2nd coil- This can keep some hum rejection and give a whole array of sounds in the middle-

Zhang, what you spinning these days?
I've got one on my Zionstrat, Parker, and almost complete "Fibson" and haven't found a guitar where it didn't add something.

But I don't move it a lot- Once I centered in on a couple of sounds I dial them in most of the time- You the same?
