Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

Re: Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

bogner uberschall - that is the only one on my radar purely for metal purposes

Re: Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

IMO, the best multi channel amp ever designed is the Bogner Ecstasy. It's basically the Marshall that never was....the dream Marshall.

However, if we're talking best metal amp, hands down, end of story....The Diesel VH4 and Herbert have taken 'best metal amp' to the limit. I've played every great amp on earth, and the Ecstasy is my personal favorite......the VH4 and Herbert are the best "metal amps."

Re: Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

So I guess Marshalls, Mesas, Laneys, Soldanos, Peaveys, Engls, are for Britney Spears guitarist, I mean it's not like any half decent metal album was ever recorded with any of these.

Some might hate me for this but the Marshall Mode Four is actually not a bad metal amp at all. That's about all its really good for. It's also solid state but still not a bad amp. I like the Mesa Triple Rectifier if your playing straight metal all the time.

Re: Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

i love Peavey 5150's they sound beautiful for metal.

I hated the Marshall mode 4 when i tried it.. back in 2004 when i was looking for an amp to play metal, i tried the mode 4 along with many amps and it was among the worst sounding that i tried.

with £1000 to spend i ended up happily with my peavey 5150.

almost decided to go for something more versatile earlier this year in the form of either a

Diezel Herbert
Engl SE
Cornford MK50II.

But i decided i didnt really want to spend all that money when my current amp sounds so good.

HOw well does the XTC do metal vs the Uber, VH4 etc?

IMO, the Ecstasy does metal the best, just because I think it's got the best tone out of the bunch, and it has no lack of gain or definition. However, the Diezels are voiced more modern, like the Framus and ENGL. I played that Diezel Herbert over at GC Sherman Oaks plugged into 2 4-12's, and almost disemboweled myself! :laugh2: The Diezel Herbert is one hell of a metal amp.
I can play metal, since I grew up on it in the 80's, but my taste leans toward blues/roots/heavy rock, so I go for more organic and vintage tones. That's why I prefer the Bogner sound over most others. The thing with Bogner is you can get anything you want out of them. I have mine dialed in to sound like 3 classic amps. If I wanted crushing metal tones, I'd just flick a few switches and it's there. I'm really enjoying the Gibson Goldtone a lot lately too.

I understand the comment about most of the albums using Marshalls, Peavey's, Laneys etc, and it's true.....they all defined the sound of metal.
But....this thread was "Ultimate metal amp" and there's only a few amps that fall into that category, and none of them cost less than $1700.

Re: Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

Bogner Uberschall
Deizel Herbert
Madison

Those are probably the top three...

Re: Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

The Ecstasy doesn't have enough gain to do metal properly.

The Überschall sounds great, but has too honky of a midrange to be used for certain playing styles and mixes.

The Diezels... meh. Overpriced, and don't even sound that good.

Don't even get my started on Madisons. Knobs that don't work? DUCT TAPE HOLDING WIRES TOGETHER!?

5150's, IMO and for my style, hands down, the best metal amp. Regardless of price. Check this out - Dan Weller of SikTh started with 5150's, moved up to a JSX briefly, recorded 2 albums with an Überschall. His co-guitarist has an endorsement with Diezel, and Dan has gone back to 5150's. He could pick an Überschall, or have an endorsement deal with Diezel, but he picked the 5150. Why? Becuase for that style of music, they're perfect.

hmm interesting, joe

RECKLESS - tell us more about your Voodoo modded 800
Well it is vertical imput. I had an extra gain stage added so mine has four preamp tubes. I sent a Cd of 5 songs with tone I loved. It sounds sweet. Hot and nasty. I also wanted it to sound a little thicker, which it does. I also had a bottom control put on later when I sent it in for some work, (filter cap.)It does Judas Priest, Motley, Ratt, Van Halen really well. My only complaint is it could be a touch quieter. But it is a high gain amp, those make some noise. I can also get a clean enough sound using my guitar volume. Very responsive amp. Trace is a great guy and does excellent work.

Re: Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

The Koch Powertone II is a serious contender here too, it has one more tube gain stage more than all the other high-gain amps to take distortion to the max. (not shure about the diezel though)
Big fat distortion.

My Bogner Ecstasy pushed with a modded TS-9 gets a monster metal tone!

Re: Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

I tried a Cornford that was a great Metal stack!!!! sounded great.... The Bogner has to be another one! Some of the Boogies are great... I think the Marshall JMP-1 is great for metal as well.... but that is just a preamp....

For the cheap side of things you can't go wrong with a 5150.....

Re: Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

For me, nothing beats an cranked old Marshall 2204 with a TS9 slamming the front end. Can't beat that power tube crunch!

Cheers,

CJ

Re: Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

well, lets if we are talking METAL that means 80s and some bands from Europe, like Stratovarious, EdGuy, Blind Gurandian along those lines other stuff requires different tone such as say Nightwish or Korn totally different
bands and tones but you can not say that they juss METAL, so with that in mind its:

Peavey 5150
JCM 800/Plexi
Mesa Duo
Laney AOR

80's and european power metal are a pretty narrow view of "metal".
