Everyone's always asking about the best distortion, I'm curious...

What's the worst distortion you've heard from a pedal, amp, or band in general?

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

Everything by indie bands suck... Especially The Strokes.. CRAP tone.

Scooped tones with mesas suck.

Boss MT-2.
Fulltone OCD.

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

John Fruciante when he uses his wah & phasers & stuff at the end of Dani California, Kirk Hammett, Racer X...

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

The Big Muff from the 1970's. Noisy/hissy/compressy. Ten pounds of crap in a five pound bag...

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

All pedals sound awful to me. The only good overdrive is a cranked tube amp!:friday:

Sprinter

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

My first amp was this pos solid state Crate 1X12 made around 1980-82. sounded thin and terrible until I killed it with a Proco Rat ! smoke came outta it! LOL.

what? holy friggin cow man! i was reading about this pedal from zvex and it said that it can blow your amp, but i wasn't sure if he was saying that metaphorically or what.

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

yeah, it did. It was a 30 watter or something and smoke came outta it for a minute or two! LOL

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

Worst amp dist? Old 1983 Peavey bandit 112 I had. It had no definition, it was like linking two compressors and a fuzz pedal together. Sonic poop! Worst pedal dist was a Boss Megadrive, it was my friend's and I couldn't think of when he actually used it. The dist was very unusable in my opinion. Worst band dist check out Satyricon Dark Medieval Times or Dark Throne's first albums. I am not saying I think the bands suck, in old black metal the bad tone and production was intentional, I'm commenting on the quality of distortion or lack thereof.

Hmm, I actually like that kind of tone from time to time. (check out this video, I think the tone is pretty good)

I think the old death metal distortion is pretty darn bad. Its just.. excessively.. fuzz sounding. The white stripes tones grate on me after a while too.

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

Arion Metal Master, with the treble knob turned past 6. it's actually a decent pedal and i use it a lot for bass, but once the treble gets up past about halfway, it turns to a gigantic increase in high-mids. very painful on the ears.

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

Sonic poop!

That shall be the name of my next band!

Yeah...the Bandits are pretty bad! My last band went to "open stage/auditon night" at a club we wanted to play. I was told "just bring your guitar, we have amps for you to use" I thought "how bad could it be?" I played our set thru a Peavey Bandit 65 while trying to force a smile.......yikes!

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

:firing:Danelectro mini series, the "black coffee" metal distortion.:rocket:

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

DOD "Grunge" Distortion

Been there, had long hair and flannel, done that.

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

Oh man...

I dunno.

There's been soooooo many over the years with various degrees of suckditude... it'd be hard to pick a clear winner, or eh... wiener!

I also try to keep a clear mind that ALL sounds are valid in context, you never know when "bad" tone might be good especially when layering parts buuuut...

Among the winners for almost always sucking are newer solid-state Marshalls & valvestates... solid state Fender amps are pretty bad too. By comparison a PV Bandit is wicked rad. Crates? Sure...

POD's can be heinous...

DOD pedals blow. I bought a hot pink one when I was like 10 or 11... it was...

Interesting.

I think one of the worst ever was maybe in 2000 or 2001... I had a band come into my studio and they owned fairly crappy amps. I had a collection of VHT, Boogies, JCM800 etc...

The one guitarist jumped at the shot to play a Dual Recto... The other one was fairly adamant about playing his DOD pedal into a solid state PV, maybe a Bandit?

Sounded horrible.

I plugged him into a VHT Pitbull but he didn't like it. He liked "his" tone...

Maybe it was just the worst because I had to listen to it for two or three weeks and the other sound was just sooooo much better...

I dunno.

A few days into it I started thinking that kid might've been dropped on his head as baby... lol
