What's the worst distortion you've heard?

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

I reckon kurt cobains studio tone was great (especially on Nevermind) but live (from the muddy banks of wiskah) tone is not so good although unplugged in new york had good tone.

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

Dan-o-Fab distortion pedal, it's loud, like a rusty chainsaw...well, it was $20

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

The distortion from my first amp, a Peavey Mark 3 Musician head and 4-12 ported cab that I got when I was a sophomore in like 1979, was absolutely awful. :earl:
Loose, flabby, boomy, muddy. Everything you don't want in a distorted amp tone.

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

I saw my student's band about a month ago and his distortion was the worst in recent memory.......Les Paul>DS-1>GE-7> Marshall Solid State half stck...MG series, I believe.....sounded awful...scratchy, icepicky, cat mating sounding mess.

I have since showed him the benefits of a decent tube amp and a little less gain.

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

99.999% of solid state amplifiers [Peavey, Fender, Crate, Roland, etc...]
DOD
Digitech
Line 6
Anything "Muff"
Vox AC50 Distortion

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

The distortion and overdrive sounds from my Korg AX1B don't sound too good. I usually keep them on low settings and layer up a bunch of other effects when using it.

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

- anything '70s fuzz
- DOD - Digitech - Zoom through anything
- anything through a Crate SS amp

Millions who swear by their bad monkey would disagree with you.
My Digitech Multi (run direct no less) gave some very good and usable tones for me. It was the best I could afford and to be truthful it worked great.

well kurt actually had his moments...I'll break it down for you. remember that Wishkah is mainly just a few shows. and not really highlights. they had a friend of the bands compile it from a random and incomplete sample of Soundboard tapes. there are actually several songs from the same show. nothimg really special about them. Wishkah is kinda forced. Albeit the 12/30/93 HSB is pretty nice.

12/03/89 2-songs, 11/25/91 4-songs, 12/28/91 3-songs

Bleach Era: 3/87-12/89ish it was various short scale off-set waist POS guitars into a DS-1 and usually his beat-up mismatched tube twin RI.

you really cannot get a awful tone here. But it was usually the ****ty lefty guitars that ruined the sound. Here is a example of a late 1989 euro tour with the band TAD. Kurt had smashed everything he owned out of frustration. Someone from subpop flew in and got Kurt this extra awful guitar. Had he still had his univox mosrite copy he might have sounded pretty decent.

Nevermind Era: 1/90-10/92ish With money from Geffen and Publishing coming in: Kurt buys a 1966 Fender Jaguar out of the LA recycler. It has double creme Dimarzios (PAFpro/SuperD). A 1969 Fender Mustang. Also a bunch of nameless strats. Still uses a DS-1 and adds the EHX smallclone. I'm not sure why but he buys a mesa .22 preamp and massive power amp and uses rented marshall 4x12's. The issue in my mind is when you have a great preamp. why use a ds-1? Maybe he thought his tone was based on it's sound? IDK?

most shows sound awesome. he leaves the clone on too much. my favorites are the 8/91 Euro festival shows and japanese shows of 2/92. Here is my favorite Something in the way from the last Japanese show 02/19/92. actually sounds pretty amazing. and it isnt even from the soundboard.

In Utero Era: 11/92-03/01/94 The band sounds amazing on this tour. They add the germs pat smear on 2nd guitar. They have a state of the art sound crew. Kurt adds a Sans Amp, EHX polychorus and a DOD Grunge and Marshall Ministack as Jokes. He starts using modded Japanese 69 Mustang Reissues (JB's in the bridges!!!) and later gets a very unfinshed Jag-Stang from fender. which he actually does not like. MIM strats are shipped in exclusively for smashing duty.

Studio tones sound pretty awesome. except In Utero where Albini's production does not gel with alot of people.

Hope I could show you that There are some good live sounds.

All pedals sound awful to me. The only good overdrive is a cranked tube amp!:friday:

Home!

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

I still have in a closet somewhere an original Zoom 505...
+1.
And that reminds me of a story.

At a music festival I went to several years ago, there were some bands from out of the country playing, and so they didn't travel with their equipment. The festival organizers scrounged up some gear, but there were no amps for some of the guitarists. There was an Italian band that needed something to plug their guitars into.

One of the organizers who knew me asked me to bring a few items of gear. I was flyng to the festival so I couldn't bring an amp but I brought my Korg AX300G which has some decent overdrives and distortions. I let one of the guitarists use that. It has a speaker cab simulator and they ran it direct to the board. The other guitarist had to run through a Zoom 505, which also has speaker cab emulation, and into the board.

The difference in tones was night & day. The band started playing and the guy using my Korg multieffects had a decent, chunky, meaty tone. Not bad for direct to the board through an effects unit.
The guy using the Zoom 505 sounded like a giant mosquito. No chunk. No crunch. Just buzz. Echhhh!!! I felt bad for them, because they were a great band, but they and the audience had to put up with lousy tone from cheap gear.
I even got comments from people in the audience on how much better the guy using my Korg effects unit sounded.

You've summed up some really nice examples LoFi

IMO: some of the "worst sounding" stuff is the best if that makes sense.

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

The first four Venom albums had awful tone. Thin, buzzy and harsh. BUT, if it sounded "good" then it wouldn't be Venom! FWIW, I always loved Slayer's tone, I'll take cranked mids over scooped any day.

Cheers,

CJ

Jack White has the worst EVER overall!

This is about the worst distortion song though,

"Cult of Personality" by Living Color, I cant figure out if I really like the distortion or I hate it?????

I always hated the tone on Cult of Personality- sounded like breaking glass.

I love my Big Muff- though just for psycadelic Pink Floyd/Hendrix type stuff. It served that purpose.

I hated the Boss OS-2 pedal. Combination overdrive and distortion. Didint do either too well.

Re: What's the worst distortion you've heard?

Everyone's always asking about the best distortion, I'm curious...

What's the worst distortion you've heard from a pedal, amp, or band in general?

Definitely the default patch settings on my PODXT going through a solid state amplifier in studio direct mode. Second worst would be the Morely Power-Wah-Distortion unit I owned in the late 70's. The distortion sounded more like a cross between broken Big Muff with single coils under fluorescent lighting and a swarm of angry bumble bees :)
