Maybe the "real" question is, does being a "pro" mean you are a better musician? Going off most of the stuff I hear these days, I would rather hear a lowly semi-pro any day over a 3 chord "pro". But that is just me. Like Gene Simmons said, he knew many better bass players, and most of them were hanging on a corner jobless.

I know plenty of Johnny Bar band guys that can survive on the income they make playing dive bar gigs. I also know many musicians at the highest levels including full-time educators that have taken second jobs to supplement their "musical" income. Being a professional musician has nothing to do with how you manage your money or if you have the ability to survive solely on that income. Being a professional is about how you prepare for your craft and yes if you are being paid for doing so. If you are getting calls for "work" I would say you are a professional. The percentage of income from each revenue stream has absolutely nothing to do with the status of the musician being a professional or not. With that assertion in mind, there is no professional musician association or union that mandates members make 100% of their income from music.

You're confusing the title "Professional" with "professionalism" (acting/being professional).
For example, Jim Bob can pound a nail through a 2x4 all day long with professional results. Sometimes he charges people to do this.
However, he doesn't do this for a living; it merely supplements his income (as a pizza delivery guy).
But that doesn't make Jim Bob a Professional Nail Pounder... rather, his work/effort is of professional quality.
But then, Jim Bob saves up his pennies, gets a business loan, gets a business license, gets insured, quits his pizza delivery job and opens up a shop on the corner. He offers his services to the public as a professional nail pounder, and works full-time running his business.
Business is good, and Jim Bob makes a living with his new business.
Jim Bob is now a Professional Nail Pounder.
Some examples of actual Professional Musicians: Edgar Winter, Yngwie Malmsteen, James Brown, Tiny Tim, Peter Frampton

So you are saying the union musician that pays dues and gets gigs through a booking agency is not a professional musician because he might have a day gig? There are plenty of people that do studio work, play weddings and lounges on the weekends that are professionals and have other gigs.
One of my friends is a Logistics Manager. His band has cut a dozen records, they have toured the world multiple times as a headliner. The guy plays arenas on support tours. We are talking about a legendary punk band that has been written about and talked about for 30 years. But by your definition, he is not a professional musician. If we can not call a touring musician a professional I don't know who we can.
I also find it interesting the basis of your argument is this forum is lacking in professional musicians. Maybe you should take the time to learn about some of the people behind the usernames. You might be impressed with the accomplishments of some of the "professional" musicians on this board.
