its not about whos the best guitarist of what ever genre you like, its about that one song, that one solo that just kicked your balls the first time you heard it.........for me its vivian campbell,on dios ..rainbow in the dark, and he was only i think 19 when it was recorded...dig out your holy diver and check it out.

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

THE best guitar solo ever on "Tunnel Of Love" by Dire Straits. Tasteful, what a tone, phrasing...seemed perfect to me since day 1! :)

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

the evil that men do - iron maiden - adrian harris
sultans of swing - dire straits - mark knopffpfpflfppffpsepeogper
wang dang doodle - howlin wolf - hubert sumlin

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

Call me Old School, or just old, but Comfortably Numb and Stairway to Heaven have always done it for me............

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

Crazy Train (This is what made me say I have to play guitar!) Over the Mountain, Eruption, Mr Scary, Hotel California, For the love of God. Just to name a few the list is endless...

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

"Hotel California" really kicks ass. just perfect in every way. Steve Vai's "I'm the Hell outta here" at Crossroads 04 was another perfect solo. "Caravan" on the Chester&Lester album was a perfect one if there ever was. "Pride and Joy" and "texas flood" from the Live Alive album too. The "No Quarter" solo and General guitar work from a bootleg I have from 1975 are sublimely perfect as well.

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

I think age will be a major factor in the choices shown here, some plonker's bound to say something by Kirk Hammett :eyecrazy:

Age has taught me a very valuable lesson... there are some guitarists, past and present, who make music that astonishes me and leaves me struck dumb and wondering why I bother ( Kirk's not one .. lol )

I'm not into flash, i'm into touch and phrasing.
Luke's played some incredible solos with Toto, not so keen on his solo stuff.
Gilmour.. 'nuff said ( especially Divison bell )
Gary Moore .. Empty rooms
Neal Schon.. Send her my Love

Viv's solo on rainbow in the dark is a masterpiece, I agree but he should be shot for joining bloody Def Leppard, such a waste :banghead:

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

Several people have already nominated David Gilmour for "Comfortably Numb" so I'm going to suggest him for "The Fletcher Memorial Home" (from "The Final Cut"). IMO, a staggeringly beautiful interlude in a staggering ugly album.

Jeff Beck - "Nadia".
Richard Thompson - "Calvary Cross" (numerous live/bootleg versions)
Eric Clapton - "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
Frank Zappa - "Watermelon In Easter Hay"

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

Steve Howe on Yes' 'Perpetual Change' probably has everything I like in a solo.
Robert Fripp in 'Starless'.
Steve Morse in Deep Purple's 'Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming'.
Allan Holdsworth's 'Devil Take the Hindmost'.

So true on so many thing's:

The bit about Kirk Wah Wah Hammett, nothing against him, Lol But yeah age will show a factor, Gilmour I guess you had to be there..( Age factor)

Viv joining Def Leppard?? this just does not make sense to me..the fit is just not right. I won tickets to go see them, I sold them, not Def Leppard without Steve Clark.

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

I can totally agree with a bunch of the cliched favorites; Comfortably Numb, Hotel California, Rainbow In The Dark, etc...

I'll pick a lesser though of solo that I totally dig:

Smooth Up In Ya, by the Bullet Boys - Just an all around great piece.

And say what you want about this one, but:

Talk Dirty To Me by Poison - Just a fun lyrical ditty, perfect for he tune!

Man card revoked..you did not just mention Poison in this thread of brilliant guitar solos did you?. :dunno:

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

Time.

Although Dogs, One of These Days, Shine On, Another Brick and Comfortably Numb are all great as well.

Lesser mentioned ones I really like are Crossfire by SRV, Alive by McCready (Pearl Jam), Orion, Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker and Moby Dick, and rip on me all you want but I love Fade to Black and No More Tears.

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

One Beatle Tune- "Something". I believe it was in the Ny Times that a columnist argued that Harrison was the best guitarist ever because no one ever changed his solos. He said it showed that he had a perfect sense of what to play, and that there's nothing to change about them.

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

I still dig the solo in "My Sharona". One of, if not my all time favorite.

Re: whats your favorite guitar solo?

what the hell is a bullet boy?..and did he realy include cc devile?......oh well if thats what he thinks is cool, and thats what this thread is about ,i guess im cool with it.
