How high are we talking here? For uber metal tones I love the BOSS Mega Distortion. For hard rock and classic metal the Chandler Tube Driver is my holy grail. Very creamy and super responsive.

Hovercraft Amps makes incredibly brutal hi gain sludge machines based on Matamps, Laneys, Sunns and the like. I want one.......soooooo bad.

I have no problem with high-gain amps. Except when they're switched on.

Sirjack, are you familiar with these? This is the very latest one. It'll do a Laney and a Matamp....AND go cleanish, which is something Hovercrafts don't do often.

Prices are ridiculously low. I think this one is a 20w head for $650.

A cranked AC30 (preferably with Celestion Blues) is my answer to everything amp-related, whether it be clean-ish, overdrive, or high gain.

Are we talking high gain or just a distortion tone??

My fav amps for good old school crunch tones are plex face Marshalls or brown face Fenders. A good JTM-45 or a brown Deluxe or Concert is a great sounding amp for just plug in, turn up and get some nice natural grind however none of those amps are high gain IMO.

If I were going to buy a high gain amp right now I'd get a VHT/Fryette Pitbull UL...that is an amazing piece of machinery and is mind blowing but it's way more amp than most of us have a place to really use!

My favourite high gain tones all seem to come from the Peavey 5150. That new EVH 5150 amp sounds stupidly fantastic too: http://youtu.be/W46XQ-grJEc (and versitile, I've heard good clean and rock tones out of it too)

I was just listening to a comparison clip between the 5150 and the Soldano SLO the other day, and I have to say the sound was pretty close but the SLO was creamier sounding, so it might just be up there too.
