What's your ideal weight for Les Paul's?

Re: What's your ideal weight for Les Paul's?

I’m thinking as light (and thin) as possible. Big and heavy isn’t great when you want to rock out for a extended period of time.

Tonally everyone likes different things, so there will be no consensus. The vintage tone seems to be best at that 8.5-low 9 pound range.
But there are some great heavy Norlin era guitars that really kick butt at over 10. Of course the tonal balance is different to that airy vintage blues tone, but as long as you're not wanting to fit the square peg in a round hole it works just fine.

And then ES les Pauls are super light as well as chambered ones. Similarly their tone is not quite the same as a solid one, but still great.

Re: What's your ideal weight for Les Paul's?

Always picked my Les Pauls based on how they sound.

Ditto...I have never concerned myself with a guitars weight. I fully understand why someone could be because of back issues or the like, but a guitars weight has no definitive effect on the sound.

Playability, likeability and all being equal, I'd pick a heavier one.

I'd love one to be about 6lbs, and not dig into my ribs, but I don't think Gibson will go for it (although the Smartwood series was close).

Re: What's your ideal weight for Les Paul's?

I like them better under 9 lbs. Maybe its more of a balance thing with me because I play sitting, and the Les Paul is a bit butt heavy.

I picked up a Les Paul this past week, couldn't believe how heavy it was, and like you said butt heavy. Not for me for those reasons , 8-9lbs would be a comfortable weight for me.

Re: What's your ideal weight for Les Paul's?

My Les Paul is just over 10 lbs. A bit on the heavy side but manageable.

Re: What's your ideal weight for Les Paul's?

Slightly OT, but the heaviest guitar I ever had was the hard Ash John 5 Tele. I bought it used to flip and I think it was over 11 pounds.

Re: What's your ideal weight for Les Paul's?

I have no idea of the exact weight but wow my #1 lp is about as heavy as they come. At the time i bought it, someone told me “weight = sustain,” which i don’t but these days. My lp sounds great but i believe low weight = resonance. Either way, mine is cool.

Re: What's your ideal weight for Les Paul's?

I like them on the heavy side (with a thick neck), to me that's a classic LP. But then I'm tall and don't notice an LP's weight when playing them for a whole gig.

Re: What's your ideal weight for Les Paul's?

My Epiphone Florentine is about 7 lbs
My Gibson Custom Studio in my signature is about 7.5 lbs

So I'd say about 7 to 7.5 lbs
