What’s your single favorite pickup?

I've been thinking if I wanted to say the bonamassa 2012 but no, that pickup works great in THAT guitar. What about the JB? no, great in tele's and strats but suck in LP's. custom? not my flavor.

I'm back to the Jazz man. slap in an alnico III for more clarity but with the sweetness of the alnico 2 pro. alnico4 for more even tone and even more flutey overtones. unoriented alnico5 for more balls. alnico8 for balls to the walls and grind.

Jazz it is.

All right, I hate to post this on SDF, but my favorite pup for quite some time has been the rail hammer hyper vintage.. there's just nothing else like it out there.

It's rather traditional humbucker whined which explains the vintage side however, it has humongous slug pole pieces under the trouble strings and rails under the base strings.

As a result, it sounds like a PAF with tighter bass and warmer highs. Again there's nothing out there that I know of that really fits this bill. Would love to know if anybody else has found alternatives to this formula.

Of course it's pretty ugly half rail and half poles but I'm a form follows function kind of guy. But a lot of my customers aren't, so I only managed to refer a few of these a year as opposed to many many SDs.

I've always said that they could corner the market if they put a cover on the thing :-)

How balanced are the 2 sides? Do the treble strings 'feel' different than the bass strings?

Great question.. apparently such a big issue that they cover it in their FAQ.

Absolutely no balance issues or problems with bending. Just imagine your favorite PAF with a tighter bass and warmer highs.

As you would imagine people would normally imagine rails for bending but they address this with their FAQ.. I'm sure artie or free frog could guess what's under the cover pretty good but they say that the field is so comprehensive that it doesn't matter.. it's all picked up evenly.

For the same reason they don't do a separate Fspace.. they say that everything gets picked up, although I've only used it in g spaced guitars.

Then maybe that's not the best word..
Take the high end of a regular PAF and make it smoother, glassier with more sustain and nothing brittle.

It makes leads high on the neck thicker with more sustain without adding mud anywhere.

so the new summary would be smoother fatter highs with tighter Lows.

It's a lifesaver on muddy thick Les Paul's, but sounds pretty good with practically anything.
