Whelp, I Hate Particle Board (Major Cab Surgery Content)

Re: Whelp, I Hate Particle Board (Major Cab Surgery Content)

What we should really be talking about is those Girl Scout cookies.

Re: Whelp, I Hate Particle Board (Major Cab Surgery Content)

yep. particle board certainly does suck!

Re: Whelp, I Hate Particle Board (Major Cab Surgery Content)

Got the grill re-attached in one piece. I ended up not gluing it because the staple gun worked fine - who would have thought. The trim is back on, and the baffle is successfully mounted to the cabinet. I half attached the center piece - it's a ****ing pain in the ass getting those screws in. Because of the angle, I can't use my power drill to do pilot holes, even. Ugh.

I'm taking a break and I'll finish it up tomorrow probably. With the new baffle in it, it looks just as good as old. The speaker bolts feel SO much more secure in the plywood. I went old school and put eight in. It won't be a problem since I'm using eminence speakers, and it gives me good old peace of mind.

Re: Whelp, I Hate Particle Board (Major Cab Surgery Content)

I'm guessing they used the old baffle as a pattern to trace the cuts. Looks like a sabre saw cut to me - and a fine one at that. You could also use a router/cutting bit to make replacement/copy baffles by using the original as a pattern/jig.

I'm still standing at the starting line for my own DIY cab project. I'm planning to do a 2x12 out of birch plywood. I just got a Cannabis Rex and a Texas Heat last weekend, so I'm curious to hear how well these two work together. I had thought about trying a Swamp Thang instead of the Texas Heat, but they were out of stock at the time.

Cool project!

Re: Whelp, I Hate Particle Board (Major Cab Surgery Content)

I would never argue the merits of MDF, Press-Board, or whatever. But keep in mind the cab is 40-45 years old. They simply did not look THAT far ahead.
Anyway.....
...yeah, great choice to do it right with ply. It will last another 60 years, or until the rest of the cab falls apart.;)
I have a real liking of Eminence speakers. The Texas Heat is one of my favorites. Do not think I have ever read a guy say he did not like the C-Rex.
Are you going to run them together.?
I have always had a soft spot for mixing speakers as well...:)
best

Are there any merits? my blues deluxe atleast has real wood for the baffle. Why cant they use a plywood like jet city or VHT?? not PB

Re: Whelp, I Hate Particle Board (Major Cab Surgery Content)

I once had a stack of particle board fall on me. I'm not sure their sizes, but they were big enough so that I was completely concealed by the stuff. It was such a weird feeling being pinned face first on the concrete with what I assume to be at least 175 pounds of particle board.

I'm not a fan of particle board either. It's super heavy, and I had to help my dad move a room filled with that crap. Also, furniture made with the stuff just falls apart after any exposure because the veneers peel, the board gets saturated in humidity, crumbles, and just makes a mess.

Re: Whelp, I Hate Particle Board (Major Cab Surgery Content)

The cabinet is all fixed up now. I mounted the board with little issues - god, it's SO much stronger than the old baffle. I used the old speaker bolts as a test in some scrap plywood to make sure drilling the holes would go off without issue. I was banging that test bolt against a metal chair and the bolt itself bent without the wood moving. Now THAT'S what I'm talking about!

I really didn't want to do this when I realized how bad the problem was, but I'm so glad I did. I mounted one of the speakers (the other one should be here on Monday) already and it's incredibly sturdy. All said and done, I'm in this project under $45, so I feel pretty good.

Re: Whelp, I Hate Particle Board (Major Cab Surgery Content)

Necessary surgery is never a bad thing, and it's something I greatly look forward to doing any time I have an issue with any of my gear that requires surgery.

Mostly cuz the gnawing problem ends up giving way to problem-free gear when you're done :D

**** yeah dude, that bastard is better now than it was new.

Re: Whelp, I Hate Particle Board (Major Cab Surgery Content)

Well, I finished this last week, and got my Texas Heat on Monday. We had practice last night, and I got to open up the amp nice and loud. I messed around with all of the tone controls and whatnot, just getting used to the differences between now and two weeks ago.

I really wish I had swapped out the baffle board and been able to put the old speaker back in just to see exactly what differences were the baffle board and not the new speaker. Alas, even if the speaker was fully functional, I wouldn't have been able to, as Celestion speaker frames are only drilled for 4 bolts, and my cab has 8 for each speaker.

All that said, I was astonished by the tone I got last night. I'm chalking about 70-80% of it up to the new speaker ( I moved the C. Rex to the bottom of the cab, since it's 3db louder than the Texas Heat, that way I could hear the TH a bit better) and the rest to the new baffle. It's definitely more punchy. It's also cleaner (probably due to replacing a V30 with a 150W speaker) with less speaker breakup. It's a bit leaner in the lows now, a bit more bold in the mids, and the top end is a bit more present, but not in the typical fender ice pick to the ears way. Cleans were glorious using just the normal channel. I had to find the right amount of the bass channel to blend in for the distorted tones, by when I did by god it was incredible.

God, I wish I had done this sooner. I've never been happier with my amp rig.

Re: Whelp, I Hate Particle Board (Major Cab Surgery Content)

Congrats.
A lot of guys would say C-Rex (and who can blame them) but if I had to choose just one Emi, it would be a coin toss between the Tonker and the Texas Heat.
Well Done... (Dad)......:)
