When playing with others do you use reverb?

Just wondering who does and doesn't and what you think about using it.... I know it can make everything sound mushy with too much but should I worry about it for my style is what I am trying to figure out.... I am trying to figure out if I can just take the amp I am using to a gig (no reverb on the amp). I play clean a lot but when I was jamming with some guys the other day I didn't really like what reverb did to my sound... but we were also playing in a loft with a decent of open space. It wasn't reverberating a ton but it seemed like no matter what the settings were on my reverb pedal were, it sounded like a little too much.

What reverb pedal are you using? I use a big box Holy Grail. I always have a little bit. Rarely do I turn it off.

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

The Mesa amps I use do not have a deep Fender-like reverb. I typically leave it on all the time, adding just a little bit of air.

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

I like reverb for practising at home or recording but I never use it when playing with a band. In a band setting if it's set low I can't tell the difference and if I turn it up it detracts from the clarity and precision I like to hear. If I want a reverb-like effect I use a delay pedal set for tasteful ambient repeats.

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

Unless using my non-reverb-equipped Skylark, tuning, or trying to track down some weird sound, I always have the reverb on at least 2. Tremolo too – always on at least a hair, if the amp has it.

This is what I do too :bigok:

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

Depends on the size of the venue and the size of the band. Usually ill have a lil bit on to give my sound some depth to it and body but if the room already has bad acoustics or i'm with a big band like 5 to 6 people it either comes way down or all the way off. I will say I rarely play with a totally dry sound because at times it can be unforgiving unless you really need a tight, focused tone.

Me too. Playing alone at home can sound flat and dry, and reverb adds some depth and colour to make it more enjoyable. But playing with other instruments, and in other, larger, environments, reverb tends to blur things too much. Larger environments tend to have their own reverberations anyway, and sometimes that alone can be problematic, without exacerbating the issue.

Same for me Simon. If I can be bothered to plug in at home I'll use the reverb and other effects on my Microcube just for fun. As far as playing in a band I'm the same as you - too little you can't hear it, too much it gets in the way. Haven't used reverb at a gig in donkey's years. My main amp has no reverb.

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

I find I rarely even notice my reverb is on in a live setting.

It might add a bit of fullness and/or mush to the sound, but that's about it.

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

I never use reverb when playing with others. However, on rare occasion, I do play around with effects on my Micro Cube at home for fun, including the reverb.

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

I love reverb and i often it when im recording guitar parts even tho its more flexible to add reverb at the mixing stage because i use reverb as an "effect" and the spring reverb sound is juts a really cool and integral part of the sounds i like and the styles i play. I like it live too - but how much i use (as with all the settings on my amp) very much depends on the sound of the room and its inherent reverb/eq characteristics- which also changes depending on how many people are in the room.

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

I don't use reverb, but I use two delays and at least one of them is on at all times.

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

Depends.

I am a "always a touch" of verb guy, and very very rarely more than a little.

However, when playing i may or may not, and agree that live, delay has more of the effect than actual reverb does. Depends on the situation. Indoors would depend on the room. Outdoors, definitely a good time for a spot of verb.

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

I use a Verbzilla with one amp, but all my others have tanks in them. I never really turn it off, but I have enough on to notice it. with my Fender DR I have it on about 3.5. I like Fender Reverb a lot, but my Shiva offers the best reverb I think I have of all my amps.

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

When I was first considering trading my Super Reverb RI for a '59 Bassman LTD I thought, "But, that amp doesn't have reverb... or tremolo." And then I realized I never use the reverb or tremolo so I made the trade. I always play with even a little dirt in my cleans and I dislike the sound of overdrive with reverb on top of it. Almost never use it.

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

I use it pretty much all the time. I can agree with the others who say they use a bit at home and a bit less when playing out. I hate the sound of a totally dry amp when playing alone or with my band, I try to only play through amps with reverb. If I don't have an amp available with verb I'll try to bring delay along if I'm not already bringing my board which has a great delay.

Yup, big +1
Although I never use reverb and I mainly play alone. Also, none of my 7 amps have onboard reverb.
I have a cheap Dano echo pedal, but it's a little too vintage slap back style sounding with limited control.
I should look at getting a more modern and flexible reverb pedal. Hard to find a cost effective one though. Seeing as I don't see myself using it all the time.

I use reverb as a deliberate effect so definately on when its on in a band situation. I find most amp reverb too long for my style of playing but when using amp sims I add a bit of room or hall reverb on most of the time and in most situations have delay on for solos.
