Where are all these windsors?

I'm always hearing all these great things about the Peavey Windsor head, but I have yet to see one on Craigslist or wallapop or any shops.

People talk of them like they are everywhere, but I can't seem to track one down under $300 locally.

Where can they be found?
Where have you seen them?

I've got one that will probably go on the chopping block soon. 100 watt, hi-gain tube amps don't make very good "bedroom" amps. :smack:

I'm confused by this statement: can you not find them, or can you not find them for a price you're willing to pay? Either you're finding them for more than you're willing to pay, in which case you're finding them, or you're not finding them at all.

Re: Where are all these windsors?

They are almost always on GC used secton for peanuts unless they've finally caught on.

I'm not telling anyone the lower wattage equivalent of the Windsor (British sounding tube amp for a steal) because you'll all jack up the prices. :wizard:

I found only one in Georgia on Craigslist for $300

Re: Where are all these windsors?

I live in an apartment building and I bought the Peavey Windsor head specifically for bedroom level playing. Actually, when it comes to bedroom playing there are two key options - one is to use preamp for distortion and another one is minimizing pre-amp gain and using power amp with overdrive or distortion pedal for dirt. I personally greatly prefer the latter one. Most pre-amp distortion that I have heard sounded too fizzy and buzzy for my taste. The best sounding pre-amp distortion always happened to have some sort of solid state clipping - the Marshall SL5, the Blackstar HT series, the Tubemeisters, but almost any tube power amp with a good pedal sounded incomparably better to me, at any volume, including what we refer to as bedroom levels.

I believe that the idea behind small amps did not work. It was about being able to crank the power amp at bedroom levels, but even the smallest power amps with one 6V6 or EL84 tubes are way too loud for that. Once you are limited to pre-amp distortion with master volume or pedals or both, size does not matter. Or actually it does - the bigger the better. When not cranked, the bigger tubes and bigger iron still sound much better then the small stuff. Small power amps would sound much better if you could crank them, but then they get prohibitively loud regardless of size and wattage.

Conclusion - a big amp with big power tubes and iron and a good overdrive/distortion pedal is a much better solution for bedroom playing than small amps, because you still can't crank them.

No a well made amp that does not drill a hole in your skull saves your hearing!!
I have used highpowered amps for a great many years, and I am far from deaf!
Clean( as in not only piercing nasty mids only) and sweet tones will not destroy your ears.
Sure excess volume will kill your hearing in the long run, but those little nasty amps we have today, with their artificial loudness(boosted frequencies that fatigues your ears) are way more harmfull than a 100 watter that is using a much wider spectrum, soundwise!

Those only drilling mids amps are real hearing enemies!

Re: Where are all these windsors?

When I dropped off my Marshall to the tech today there was a Windsor on the bench. In fairness there were at least a dozen Marshalls in there for repair.

Re: Where are all these windsors?

The build quality of the Peavey Windsor is no better nor worse than quality of those Vietnamese Marshals which cost 3 to 5 times more. I have both, so I believe I know what I am saying. It appears that Vietnamese Marshals have flimsier PCBs, but in general their quality is good. And so are Peavey Windsors. I am actually very happy that I was able to get this great amp for peanuts just because people are not buying it because they think that it is too cheap to be good. The truth is that it is cheap and very, very good. Play it side by side with JCM 800 and you will see that the amps are very similar tone wise (regardless of the fact that they have different PI design) and that the Peavey sounds just as good.
