Which 1x12" guitar cab would you recommend?

Hi mates,
I'm using an Engl Thunder 50 drive amp (4 x jj ecc83, 2 x jj 6L6GC). It is an open back combo loaded with Celestion V12-80 silver series. I would like to acquire an 1x12" closed back cab to get more bottom end and lift up my combo.
What cab/speaker would you recommend me? :friday:
Thanks in advance. Cheers.

Trying to get more BOTTOM end, from only a 1X12 ???

The only cab that cab that do that for you is in the kink :

http://www.portcityamps.com/112.html - get the OS cab.

Just give that cab an Emi Swamp Thang !

" Very powerful, thick and chunky tone. Very touch-sensitive with good sustain. Awesome bottom end. "
Oh, there's plenty of other cabinets & speakers that can manage it. Mesa/Boogie was doing 1x12" thiele ported cabinets at least 20 years ago. I've had my EVM-12L thiele 16 years or so, but had been drooling after them for years before I got it. Granted, if price is similar I'd probably go for the Port City over the M/B...

An oversize 1x12 closed back can work just fine, as well. The "standard" size & undersize ones don't have enough volume (in the sense of cabinet dimensions, not SPL) to get any cabinet knock going, though.

For speakers, a lot depends on power handling & tone preference. Swamp Thing gets some comparisons to EVM-12L, but darker and smoother. You could go for a 100W Axis 12 or FC12 from Weber, too. Or if you will use it only in combination with the combo's internal speaker, you could get a 1230-55 ceramic, for a really bassy, growly take on the Celestion sound (Celestion's revived version of the G12H30-55 is sold as a bass speaker, but Hendrix used the originals for guitar).

I know about the Boogie Thiele cabs, but i did not mention them, as i thought they have been discontinued.

SirJackdeFuzz: I just mentioned the Boogie as an example, there are plenty of other oversize ported designs that are competitive. I've heard great things about Port City for quality & ruggedness, but not so much on price.

Their interior baffle design is interesting, I'd be curious to hear one side by side with a Boogie. With a Thiele port, I don't think you actually need a bigger cabinet to get more bass out, though. Boogie's cabinet was actually based on an EV design. Port City may need more interior volume to get full bass, given they have slanted baffles eating up some of that space.

A ported cabinet is more efficient & louder than closed back, but if what you want is the sound of a closed back cabinet, the cheapest way you'll get into that is a very oversized 1x12, or a moderately oversized 2x12. The original poster did ask for more bottom end, and a ported cabinet is definitely the best for that.

Re: Which 1x12" guitar cab would you recommend?

thanks mates for the suggestions. Actually I checked the Engl 2x12" pro slanted E212V cab. If i really want more bottom end I should get a 2x12" instead of 1x12", right?. But the Orange 1x12" seems heavy in the low frequency area as well, and it's well constructed.
Despair -> you are right, a ported cab will be more efficient. Engl has some of them but they are very expensive.

The little problem is that i live in an apartment and i am not gigging with a band right now. Getting a 2x12" will be to much for my purposes.

The Thiele and Port City cabs are the only one poretd ones i know of.

What other after market brands make ported cabs that you know of ?
Would love to look into them !

EDIT : excl. the Genz Benz G-Flex series.

Skipping the oversized sealed ones for now, I know Egnater's Rebel 1x12 is front-ported. But most people I know who got them, got it on sale & replaced the stock speaker. Their tastes all ran towards something a bit more woolly than that 80W Celestion, though.

Bogner makes a number of different ported 1x12s. Diezel makes a ported 1x12. Then there's the Ear Candy Sovereign. Freda calls theirs "front vented" just to confuse search engines and prevent customers from finding them.

Mesa/Boogie also makes some widebody cabinets that have ports (not Thiele/slot-style, though).

I'm drawing a blank on other brands right now, though there are plenty of custom cabinet makers who make ported cabinets to order.

If you want a looser sound, depending on the speaker you may not want a ported cabinet. Efficiency isn't everything. Almost everyone makes an oversized cabinet or two now, but you have to watch and make sure they're oversized enough to matter. In some cases "oversized" just means "as big as the competition's smallest size."
