Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

Day-um! Boss makes a lot of distortion-generating stompboxes. OD this, DS that, SD sumthin else.

For years, I've used a GE-7 graphic for my overdrive/lead boost sound. It's set up with a modest over all gain, but with a big, wide mid-hump. Driving the front end of a crunchy Marshall (single channel JCM800 back then, DIY 18 Watter these days) just sounds better to me than the few distortion/overdrive/fuzz boxes I've tried.

I've also had a Rat kicking around since the early 80's. I like it, though I haven't compared it to many others. (I remember trying a Tube Screamer for a few days about 25 years ago: ho-hum.) I like how the Rat is versatile; it's tone control lets it emulate a smoother tube-overdrive kind of sound, but if you crank it up, it goes fizzy like a fuzz box. Overall, I like the way the Rat seems to add overtones and feedback all on it own - like the rig is about to go out of control at any second.

But, the Rat never made it onto my pedalboard, because I always just liked the GE-7 a little bit better for doing "my" sound (as opposed to the Rat's variety of sounds.)

Final point of reference: I owned an MXR Distortion+ back in the mid-70's. I was young and stupid, didn't know squat about "tone", and don't really remember what it was like. However, I've been listening to some live Police lately, and don't really dig Andy Summers' tone with his Distortion+. It's too... what... shrill? Lacking in oomph?

Here's my dilemma - I'm thinking about picking up a silverface Champ as a quieter-but-still-cleaner alternative to my Marshall. I'll mostly use it in church, where the music is (let's face it) more folky/countryish than my usual Police/Pretenders new-wavey Brit-pop. I want to use my same pedalboard with both amps, but I KNOW the GE-7 isn't going to work the same with the Champ as it does with a Marshall. With a clean amp, the GE-7 is going to give too much volume boost, and then get farty. Yuck.

So, I figured I'd just put the Rat on my board instead of the GE-7. I think it'll work well with the Champ, and it's always been a close second to the GE-7 with a Marshall. But have you seen my pedalboard?

Now you have. Bomb-proof, yes, but not very flexible. Life would be so much easier if I could find a Boss pedal I liked instead of the Rat. It would be a simple bolt-in replacement. But as I said, "Day-um! Boss makes a lot of distortion-generating stompboxes." Where to begin? So, bro's, help me narrow it down. What Boss boxes are kinda close to a Rat? Ruder than a TS, fatter than a Distortion+, but nowhere near nu-metal.

Have at it.

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

They've got a new fuzz pedal... but I really don't like it much. DS-2 might be a possibility.

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

Boss SD-1 I like alot, but that aint really a high gain pedal.

Boss BD-2 is good.

DS-1 is good, although I never really liked it myself.

DS-2 might fit your bill.

Other wise try different settings on your amp?

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

The DS-2 isnt really that great. It's got a really midrangey, focused sound. Like live Randy Roads sound. More specific, listen to some of John Frusciante's solos on live bootlegs. Its just a very harsh, grating souding pedal.

The pedal that I keep hearing raves about is the Boss OD-3 Overdrive. Supposed to be one of their absolute best ones.

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

I think the BD-2 is the most versatile, from clean boost, to OD, to distortion and the tone control is very useful.

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

I like the OS-2 alot. Its the overdrive/distortion that you can blend. personally its my fav distortion.

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

Do one of these- it won't cost you much more than a Boss pedal, but so much more OD like and dynamic:

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

I think you might like a BD-2 . . . it's got a serious bucket load of clean boost and can really scream when you kick up the gain. There are also a heck of a lot of mods out for it . . . Here's a demo of my BD-2 (after a couple of mods) through a little crappy solid state fendery sounding amp with my Dot: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=3680833&q=hi

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

Well folks, we have a winner, and it is....

The DS-1!

Who would have thought. I took everybody's input to heart, listened to all the clips I could find (OK, just on the Boss and MF websites) and went out at lunchtime sure I was going to purchase an OS-2. Fortunately, when you try a Boss, you get to try them all, and the DS-1 was right next to the OS-2. I also tried the BD-2 and the OD-3. I've reached the conclusion that I simply don't like "overdrive", I like "distortion".

Yes, the OS-2 was more flexible, but the other stuff it gave me, I didn't like. The plain old DS-1 just did what I wanted, and was $30 cheaper, to boot. I grabbed a CS-3 while I was there, and will mount them both on my pedalboard this very evening.

That said, I did notice during my brief demo that the tone control on the DS-1 is nigh on useless. It works fine from zero up to about 1/3, then it's too shrill and fizzy to do any good at all. I've already resurrected an old "DS-1 Mods" thread to find out how to fix it. https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=94044

Thanks all for your help.

very cool.... i've used DS1's for over 22 years now.... it's my standard pedal for distortion... I plan on getting a better quality pedal like the Diamond Fireburst but the DS1 is 1/4 the price..... so until i get some cash somehow the DS1 stays.. Besides i own 3 of them now

I find the DS1 sounds amazing thru some rigs and thru some amps it is too thin sounding... but a DS1 thru the right amp can be nice!

I sometimes use a DS2 once in a while and the first gain stage sounds just like a DS1 to my ears...

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

Hmmm, Lynch, Vai, Satriani, Cobain, and countless others have use the DS-1 (even unmodded MIT ones), a fine choice. Of course, if you get tired of the stock form, there are a plethora of mods out there for it.

FWIW, that's what I was going to suggest, but too late...

Badmonkey . . . lets not argue over semantics . . . or spelling. :)

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

If you aren't dead set on a BOSS pedal, maybe get an old Marshall Guv'Nor. I love those things.

Give a listen also to the G2D Custom Overdrive...

I also like the BJF Honey Bee. (Very touch sensitive.)

I have a couple of BOSS OD pedals though. The Blues Driver and DS-1. Great sounding pedals. The DS-1 might be a bit over the top for church though.

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

Slightly off topic.:onder: Instead of a SF champ, Have you considered a fender champ 12 (Made from 87' to 92') I never played a church gig,But If I had to... I'd get me another one of these.:D It has Verb and channel switch for gain.

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

Send it to Keeley, then it'll really do it for you. :)

Great looking board, by the way.
