Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

I my self wouldnt want a boss pedal at least stock but if you need boss then maybe try a pre modded boss pedal from either indyguitarist (www.indyguitarist.com) or keeley () or similar. There are many mods and i know brian form indyguitarist will mod to your specification (not sure about robert keeley as i have never dealt with them).

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

Yea.... I owned every Boss OD and dist except the metal zone, and the last one I tried (The DS-1) is the only one I still own :) Go Figure... It don't sound good with every amp, but it sounds good with most.

The OS-2 would be my second choice. The BD-2 was pretty cool for what I was doing at the time I owned it, but the DS-1 was my favorite overall.

Well folks, we have a winner, and it is....

The DS-1!

Who would have thought. I took everybody's input to heart, listened to all the clips I could find (OK, just on the Boss and MF websites) and went out at lunchtime sure I was going to purchase an OS-2. Fortunately, when you try a Boss, you get to try them all, and the DS-1 was right next to the OS-2. I also tried the BD-2 and the OD-3. I've reached the conclusion that I simply don't like "overdrive", I like "distortion".

Yes, the OS-2 was more flexible, but the other stuff it gave me, I didn't like. The plain old DS-1 just did what I wanted, and was $30 cheaper, to boot. I grabbed a CS-3 while I was there, and will mount them both on my pedalboard this very evening.

That said, I did notice during my brief demo that the tone control on the DS-1 is nigh on useless. It works fine from zero up to about 1/3, then it's too shrill and fizzy to do any good at all. I've already resurrected an old "DS-1 Mods" thread to find out how to fix it. https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=94044

Thanks all for your help.

ya the DS1 sounds great thru my Peavey Classic series amps but not so hot thru my Fenders

My final version of my DS-1....
New pots, a different layout for the germanium diodes, and a few new capacitators.

Hey thats my DS-1!

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

The ds-1 is pretty good for the price but if you wan't something better in the future send it to keeley for the ultra mod for a much fatter and versatile sound.

better then a modded pedal is to buy a Diamond Fireburst!!! Great sounding units with simular gain to a DS1 but pretty much noise free!!!!! Awsome units

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

Still here.

The DS1 stock sounds... urgh. Couldn't find a single use for it. I turned mine into a low gain, organic, with a useful tone control pedal monster. Sounded gorgeous. I swaped out a good 6 or 7 of the caps though. And the same amount of resistors. Can't recall if I got the diodes swapped though...

i really could not see doing all that... if a pedal was not working for me i'd just buy something different... when it comes to distortion pedals i feel it is all about the entire signal chain... the axe, the pu's, the amp.... i don't use a DS1 much with single coils.... works wonders with humbuckers... The DS1 works with some amps and not others...

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

Was cheap :laugh2: And anything is experience for me. I can't afford much more than a Boss. If it doesn't work for me... gotta mod it :(

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

Oh how fun it is forum surfing giving two cents on threads I find interesting!! I haven't read anyone elses suggestions, so I apologize if I seem to be bhind on anything. Boss has two new pedals that model Fender amps. One is a deluxe reverb? and the other is a Bassman, those both sound mighty fine to me!!

I personally have a DS-1 I picked up at a pawnshop for $40 when my Digitech Hot Head died, and I'm glad I did. I use it for punk, but it works really well for blues, and just playing around with the distortion and tone knobs I've discovered how versatile it is. I'd reccomend it to you as it can add a bit of hair, or give a good crunch, and there's a nice fuzz-like setting. My favourite thing about my DS-1 (and my friends, which is newer than mine, as he bought it brand new) is that even with gain floored, the guitar isn't muffled out, you can still hear the notes and string definition.

Only other recommedation would be a their OD-3 Overdrive pedal, which seems to be light on gain.

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

Depends on what tone you want to get... as far as Boss Distortions, specifically, I use either a Metal Zone or DS-1... primarily..

The DS-1 can get more rough tones... and more raspy... the Metal Zone can have a smooth tone...

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

nice, rich - enjoy

maybe drop john spina a line to see if he is moddin' much these days and if he can get the tone control a wider useful range for ya

cheers
