Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

I looked at Keeley's site for the DS-1 mods. Wierd. He doesn't give much (or any) description of the stock units deficiencies, or how his mod changes the tone. Apparently I'm supposed to buy the DS-1 mod because 1) it's Keeley, 2) it sounds great, and 3) Steven Vai has one.

Sorry, but I need a little more info to go on than that. I think I'll try the stock unit for a while, then see what mods are available to correct any complaints I might have.

I don't understand youz guys dissin' the DS-1 for beaing a "cheap distortion pedal". In my book, that's good. I was happy to find out that the pedal I like (DS-1) was $30 cheaper then the pedal I had intended to buy (OS-2).

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

The Keely stuff is pretty amazing, but if you don't hear a deficiency with a pedal, why get something that is "an upgraded" version of that?

I know what I like in a pedal and some of the things that the pedals lack, there are mods for them from different companies and if you don't hear a difference, why pay for a difference. I have had pieces of equipment modded and I have had items upgraded.

I love the sound of true bypass, but I also know that with my current setup, I don't have to be as particular as I had been prior. My old setup, I had such a high level of gain that any noise was amplified exponentially, so I was pretty particular for what I used.

I knew that I had to accommodate for losing "x" amount of signal ... which was good for certain things.. and bad for others, but it was subjective..

If you like it.. that is all that matters.

The majority of the stuff in the Keely mods are just upgraded part for a clearer signal, IMHO.

The indyguitarist site has sound clips of the stock and of most mods so you can really hear the difference as well as descriptions on the mods (far better site then keeley).

Now THAT is a useful bit of information. I will definitely check that out. Many thanks.

I got the DS-1 installed on my pedalboard last night. I played it briefly through my amp (with the MASS turned down pretty low). No buyer's remorse, but I can hear what people don't like about the DS-1. It's low end is mooshy, and it lacks dynamics even at low distortion settings. I like its character, but I wish it was a bit more transparent. Time to start mod-shopping.

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

Those are the things that the DS-1 mods address, tighten the bass, increase playing dynamics, increase clarity and transparency. ;)

Re: Which Boss Distortion? (Long, sorry.)

I just wanted to post something that wasn't about SeraphimTN....

Last week, I owned NO Boss distortion boxes. Now, I own two. First I bought a DS-1, stock. Sounds OK, closer to what I want than the other Boss boxes I tried.

Then, McLaughysSN and I agreed to trade - my unused DynaComp for his unused Keeley Ultra Mod DS-1. Woo-hoo!

Now I'll be able to compare the two and write a proper review. I can use the Keeley while modding the stock box to see what Indy Guitarist or Monte Allum can do.
