I don't know what the list is (yet) but I'll guess and say Barber, Teese, Pedalworx, or Analogman. Definitely check out a Armstrong Orange Squeezer if you don't want that squash sound...think "Sultans of Swing."
I had a Keeley Comp and I like any of the Orange Squeezer clones better for my personal sound (because it doesn't squash, some models have a bias pot so you can get OD/boost as well, and it doesn't dull the high-end much), even though I do like the Ross Comp sound.
The Homebrew Electronics CPR is really cool too. It's basically a really quiet ROSS that you can get for $140 shipped.

You can't do better than the Keeley Compressor, although the Dynacomp is a very reliable and good-sounding pedal.

I'll recommend the Tone Press, I got one a few months ago, and it's a great pedal...the blending feature is real nice... It can be noisy if you dime the controls to get maximum compression, but you said you didn't want too much squash so that shouldn't be an issue...

I'd go with Robert Keeley Compressor. It's really an amazing compressor pedal but very expensive.

I dunno if I'm quite willing to drop for a Keeley just yet, so I'm leaning towards the Barber. If the Line 6 compressor is anything like the one built into the POD I just might get it.
I've actually never tried a Dynacomp... I'll look into one.

I would just get a decent rack compressor, DBX, one of the nicer Behringer models, etc. Of course there are much more expesive alternatives, but the guitar has a relatively small footprint in the sound spectrum so a super high speed/low drag compressor isn't going to be needed for sound quality. Unless you are going for a super compressed sound that can be turned on and off at the floor level. "Real" compressors have always sounded better than any pedals I have heard/used. Depends more on how you want to implement it

The barber tone press is an excellent pedal. I use it to add a lot of sustain or even out my notes, and it works super great on single coils, makes them all big if you want to.
I have my contrals set gain at 11, and then mix at 1 and squash at 1. Completely silent. The guy who mentioned having noise, he either has everything dimed which I don't understand why you would do that or you need to check your powersupply.
Its the most versatile and best sound. While the keeley is plug in and play your pretty much set with that exact sound.

The mods just make the Dyna Comp sound more like a Ross (which was basically an improved Dyna Comp) or a Saffron Squeeze (which was basically an "improved" Ross).

Barber Tone Press all the way! Built better than anything else out there, sounds amazing (I use mine as a lead boost) and it's dead quiet. And you can't beat the price!

I can't think of any rack compressors that have any kind of foot switch control, unless it is used in the loop of an amp, which would work well enough for distorted tones, but kind of defeats the purpose for clean stuff. Guess an A/B-Y box type setup could be used to do that, might take some creativety
