Which KT66?

I've only tried the Saratovs in place of the =C= 6L6 and liked it but found them a little thick and a bit too dark. Still I wanna try another set. Any suggestions? The JJ, Shuguang, Gold Lion and Tung-sol all look good to me. Found reviews here... http://thetubestore.com/kt66reviews.html . Looking for BIG rock tone with great cleans. Also, my clean tone is on the edge of breakup then I push it with an OCD v4 and a SHO into medium high gain.

Howdy,

FYI, Dr. Z head honcho Mike Zaite warns owners of his amps not to use the new Tung-Sol version of the KT-66. Just a "heads up".

Someone once told me the Shuguangs have something slightly different electrically that make them dangerous in some circuits...FYI

Re: Which KT66?

actual kt66 type tubes would draw more current than a 6l6 which might be why people say be careful. too much current draw can kill your power tranny. many of the kt66's sold as kt66's arent really they are just a different version of a 6l6 in a bigger bottle.

almost all kt66's that ive tried sound best biased pretty hot

Re: Which KT66?

I like KT66's biased hot in most cases too. This is the case with most 6L6 types as matter of personal taste I guess. The same is not necessarilly true of EL34's. In my JTM45 I run KT66's hot.

The typical max plate dissapation of real British KT66's was 27 watts. This is quite different from typical regular 6L6 types. Many early 6L6's and 5881's actually have max dissapation ratings of 18 or 20 watts. Many are 25 watts, and some 70's 6L6 models such the 7581's and some 6L6GC's, are 30 watts. You really need to know what exact 6L6 your dealing with when biasing.

As for the heater current draw, most regular 6L6's only draw about 0.9 amps. The real KT66's draw 1.3 amps. EL34's draw 1.4 amps and KT88/6550's draw 1.6 amps. If the amp normally operates EL34's or 6550's okay, it should handle KT66's okay too. But an amp designed with regular 6L6 tubes in mind may not be able to handle them.

Re: Which KT66?

I just got my JTM 45/100 back with a fresh set of JJs, so those will be my base line. I asked to have the amp biased on the hot side, so we will see how it sounds.
