Ok you fellow TSL or DSL Marshall amp users. Which MArshall cabinets would you use and why. The 1960 Lead? The 1960 Vintage? Greenbacks?
I have a TSL100 Amp and would like to know what cabinets you guys like
and why. Thanks!

Re: Which Marshall Cabinet?

i grabbed a 1960AV off of ebay for $800. sweet deal. a brand new one goes for i think lik $1300 though. check out those bogner cabs. they look really tasty.

Re: Which Marshall Cabinet?

For Marshall, I've always liked the 1960 series cabs. I found that if you replace the wiring inside with a thicker gauge cable and re-enforce the back panel, it'll help make the tone a bit more crispy and the cab can handle the lowend better.

Cheers

Re: Which Marshall Cabinet?

Thanks everyone for the replies. What is the difference between the regular 1960 Lead Cabinet versus the 1960AV Cabinets. Are the vintage speakers better sounding?

Re: Which Marshall Cabinet?

I prefer V30's to G12T75's any day of the week. You may not.

Actually, new, they go for 950... Bogner's are amazing cabinets, though. Good luck finding one!

Re: Which Marshall Cabinet?

You can pick up a second hand 1960 on ebay for about £150 ($350) over here in the UK, thats crazy money for a Marshall cab!

Re: Which Marshall Cabinet?

I prefer the V-30 loaded cabs such as the 1960AV to the G12T75 loaded (1960) cabs.

In the original post he was asking what to use with a DSL or a TSL though, and don't play either.

It probably boils down to what type of music you plan on playing. For anything except modern very high gain, rock stuff, I'd probably opt for the Greenback loaded version, such as the 1960AC, although I can't complain about my V30's for just about anything. The greenbacks will work better for most blues, blues/rock, classic rock, R&B and so forth... than just about any other 12" speaker usually avialable in a recent Marshall 4x12. Additionally, they are less loud, allowing you to push the head's tubes a little farther for better tone, and they have a earlier breakup.

The standard 1960 w/ G12T75 would be better suited for country and western music than the Marshall Vintage or the Greenback though, LOL. Just dime the midrange knob.

yeah that sounds right. i got that mixed up with my dsl head. off ebay it must have been. $500-$600.

as for the difference, i like the 1960AV speakers. lower wattage so it breaks up faster and gives off a better tone IMHO.

Re: Which Marshall Cabinet?

The 1960a has more upper-midrange and treble than the 1960b.
I like the sound of the celestion g12h in this cabinet. It is similar to the greenback, with a little more bottom and a little less midrange. I also have a 50w weber blue dog in a 1960a and it works nicely in this cabinet.

The 1960b sounds more hollow and has more bass.
I like the sound of greenback style speakers in this cabinet, because they have great midrange presence. The 30w weber blue dog sounds nice in this cabinet too.

I am not a big fan of the v30 but there are lots of other people that like them.

Regarding my opinion, I like classic hard rock tones with significant midrange presence.
