Which P90's?

Just bought a new Gibson Les Paul Special DC with 2 P90's. The stock sound is ok, but I want to put in some hi end pups to really make it come alive. I was thinking about Rio Grandes or Lollars. Any other suggestions for booteek P90's?

Re: Which P90's?

My first comment is that Gibson P-90's (NOT p-100's!!!!) are pretty tasty overall as P-90's go. Live with them for a while. They may grow on you.

That said - I've got a duncan vintage/custom combo in my LP. I love it. Fat blues and Jazz at the neck, rauncchy blues and rock from the bridge.

Re: Which P90's?

I have never heard a bad SD P-90.

I prefer the Custom for really rocking but I have used the Vintage a lot as well and the Ant's are spectacular.

I had pretty good luck with the Stacked bridge wired series, pretty fat P-90-ish sound, not quite gritty enough but certainly close and very quiet.

Re: Which P90's?

I have "Duncan/PRS-designed" pups in my SE Soapbar II Maple. I don't see a need to upgrade.

If you don't like the stock P90 pups in your geetar, go SD. "High end" often times means you pay more but doesn't, much more often than not, necesarily mean better pups. I hated the Fralin P90 I had in one of my guitars. (Worst pickup I have ever played in any guitar anywhere). Call the SD custom shop and they will set you up with a custom pup at the price of a boutique stock pup.

Re: Which P90's?

Cool:beerchug: I've always been a fan of Seymours (every guitar I've ever owed had them or a variation thereof). I just want to experiment and try something new:cool2:

Re: Which P90's?

Of the different P-90s I've used, I have come to the opinion that regular Gibson P-90 is the best. Not too hot, not too weak, and they have that classic growl, fatness and bite.

As Aceman said, live with it for a while before swapping it out. If it's really not floating your boat and you want something hotter, both the Hot and Custom Duncans are good. The Antiquities are nice too - I like the neck version (paired with the Gibson in the bridge). The Ant. bridge was missing a little something to me - maybe it's the Alnico 2?.

I've never played the Dimarzios or other brands so I can't comment - although I've heard that both the Fralins and Lollars are excellent.

Re: Which P90's?

Forgot to mention that I find P90s work best, for me, not full tilt. Volume and Tone knobs are a P90's best friend along with a nice overdriven low watt amp.

Re: Which P90's?

See, my only problem with the Gibson P90s is that theyre not calibrated. Both are at 8.0K ohms, and sometimes, height adjustment alone can't balance them...at least not to my tastes.

Lollar DOES make a great P90. For $80 bucks a piece, that's not an outstanding price. PRetty fair actually.

Lollar doesnt use metal baseplates or metal spacer bars. I've heard this reduces "eddy currents" or something like that.

I percieve his pickups as having a tad more hi-fi clarity, and a tad less rudeness than the typical P90.

That being said, The Duncan P90s are fantastic too.

Re: Which P90's?

After my last post I went and tuned this lil sweetie up for lil Tuesday afternoon loudness.

Agreed . To solve this, I put a Gibson in the bridge (which I use 90% of the time) - then put a calibrated SD neck P-90 in the neck slot . Either the Vintage or Antiquity sounds great.

Re: Which P90's?

Not calibrated - :werd: I feel you there bro. P-90's are not that forgiving in the whole height /output match department.

Still, it don't take much. I'm actually using a bridge in the neck and a neck in the bridge, and they are not too far away, but enough for good balance.

I agree. I have a Les Paul Studio Gem w/ Gibson P-90s. I did not like them for the longest time. But the more I played them the more I fell in love with them.

Give them a little time.

That studio GEM has P-100's if I'm not mistaken. That could explain why you didn't like them! Check that out!!!!!
