Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

Hi all

I recently put a pair of hybrids into the Hamer Studio Custom in my pic here.
The neck is a 59/Jazz and the bridge is a 59/Custom ...both are A5 magnets, both have Gibson covers. I retained the original Hamer 300k custom-taper pots. This guitar now sounds stunning for a huge range of styles. Every nuance of the wood and technique come through, clean or dirty, and sometimes it's hard to concentrate on playing because i just wanna stop and listen to a chord or note, and marvel at just how good an electric guitar can sound. ( I only hear my guitars through tube amps, i have heard they plan to replace vaccuum tube technology with some new device called a 'transistor' but believe me, that is not going to happen....)

I have a 1974 Telecaster Custom with the original Wide-Range humbucker at the neck and a Fralin bridge pickup, using 1 Meg pots (which were standard for these guitars, and the secret for getting the big humbucker to sound good). After 25 years of different bridges, bridge pickups and pots, this guitar is finally sounding better than it ever has, from fat jazz tones to twang and bite and scream.

The great thing about getting settled with a guitar....when you know it is 'right'....is that you can finally look at the amplifiers and get to know exactly what they're doing for your sound, and even better.....you can spend more time working at being a better player.....i have no excuses now....if i don't sound good.....it's simply that i need to work harder, not buy more pickups (so now the money i save on pickups can buy better capacitors for my amps, hehe).

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

I don't pick combos based on them being the best of the best, and I've had few sets, so here's my 2 cents:

- Hot Rodded combo: excellent HH set! Everything from cleans to metal, and it made me a Seymour Duncan believer! It was my first. Super versatile!

- Triple Alnico II Pro Staggered: Lite Ash Stratocaster. I fell in love with the A2 magnet buttery tone goodness two years ago, and when I finally got one a year ago, I was totally happy with it!

- '59n and PG+: fell in love with the mids and the bridge sparkle. It won't do everything, but in this guitar, and for the price, it is an excellent value! PG+ has some fenderish treble sparkle, and the '59 in a basswood body almost sounds semi-hollow. Nice tone! :D

Seth/Seth - Perfect for classic rock

PG/Custom - Perfect for Hard Rock and Metal. Very usable middle position in a Les Paul!

Antiquity Surfers - Just a great, chimey Strat pickup with tons of mojo.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

MIM Strat - Kinman Woodstock Noiseless (love this for clean SRV tone into a Super Reverb)

G&L ASAT - Have yet to put Don Mare's 2324s in there, but I hope to nail Roy Buchanan's tone with 'em (of course, I'll need to get myself a blackface Vibrolux as well)

Les Paul Studio with Phat Cat set is the only one I won't change.
Style = Jam Rock, Jazzy Blues, Swamp Funk, Indie/Alternative etc.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

Brian Moore i21 APH-1(n)/ PG(b) (yeah, that's it over there on the left in my avatar) The neck does great jazz and blues and just cries with distortion. The bridge growls with distortion, and does nice Robben Ford/Larry Carlton at edge of distortion. Single coil-wise, all 4 coils give very musical, usable tones! Great dynamic response. I find I use this one over my Strat to get those Knopfleresque tones.

This is my "I can't put it down" guitar. I may have to twist the tone knob going back and forth from neck to bridge, but that is what you get with only a master tone knob (no fault of the pickups, and a testimony to how great the guitar sounds).

Hamer SATQ Jazz(n)/Pearly Gates(b) I just finished the electronics yesterday so it's still new to me, but it was meant to be a backup to the i21 but it has its own personality, a bit smoother, but just as interesting. Another "do anything" guitar.

Funny how my 2 least expensive guitars are the ones that are the most dialed in. . .

nothin yet, but I got a lifetime of searchin' ahead of me

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

My '04 PRS Swamp Ash Special is pretty dialed in...

C5 bridge ~ Vintage Rail middle ~ AII neck

Volume, push/pull tone with some random whacky cap that I LOVE TO DEATH!!! Roll it allllll the way down and it doesn't get murky, gets midrangy like a wah pedal at half-throw. Pulled it out of my Hamer where it had lived for several years...

Love it.

It's my do-all super-strat gee'tar. Anything from rock/jazz/funk/fusion/country etc...

Nothing else is really "perfect" except for the EJ Strat... I like my Paul with the AII bridge ~ Jazz neck a whole bunch but there's still room for improvement I think. I'd love to get some Seth Lovers in there...

The Hamer diablo isn't bad either... Fred bridge ~ Jazz neck. Fred's pretty new to that axe...

He's ok so far.

WORLDS better then the '59 that came out. Was lacking mids & 'drive' in that axe. Had a Custom in the bridge for the longest time, went microphonic and finally died.

Too much sweat I guess.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

Mine is a Burny SG with a HighOrder PAFish spec bridge pickup and APH-1 neck. I have other great sounding guitars, but this one is the bees knees.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

Found another winning combo with the megadrive/air norton in my RGT.

After I get the new switch put in, and better grounding, it'll be perfect.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

Let me add "Full Shred Bridge in SZ520".

I'll post a full review, but I just got it back this morning, it matches up perfect with the '59 neck, and the in-between position is sweeter than either pickup alone! I recorded/mixed for about 2 hours with it, got some tones that sound like what I've always thought I wanted to hear (after rolling back the treble knob just a touch...wall of mids! And Alnico V clarity and roundness!) I feel very good about the whole thing right now.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

Stratocaster with my Zhang wound set...

Neck 6.4K scatterwound A5
Middle 5.9K scatterwound A5
Bridge 9.3K full, 7.3K tapped scatterwound A5

Good vintage tone with a lot of glass and the in between positions kill with the slightly underwound mid pup.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

I have a MIA Tele with a Blues spec. neck, ssl-1 mid, and JD bridge. That is IT! I play country/rock/blues and 60's R&B. It does it all very well. My other tele has vintage teles in it which is a bit better suited for the R&B.

I wouldn't change a thing in either one!

I'm still changing up my strat...

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

Pearly Gates in a Fender Strat!

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

I just installed an Aldrich in the bridge location in my Suhr, great overall tone! It's wide and focused, I had the Suhr DSV+ which was nice but more mellower and less note articulation. I wanted more aggressiveness with tone.
Through my Bogner Shiva & OS 2x12 w/vin30's sound awesome! :)
