Which set of Locking Tuners are best?

Re: Which set of Locking Tuners are best?

I have the mini 6in line grover rotogrip locking tuners and i love them. They have a thumbwheel on the back that you just tighten it down on the string then tune to pitch. Makes changing strings a breeze! !! And they are$ 60 bucks.

Re: Which set of Locking Tuners are best?

I have the top of the range Gotoh's on my Anderson, it's what Tom fits and they're lovely in use but a pain to change strings.
I also have Schallers on my Musicman which are ok but very heavy.

I've just put the new open backed Hipshot locking tuners on my Warmoth and I'm hooked.
The make 2 versions, so I have 3 normal height and 3 lower height and no need for a string tree now.

Very smooth , unlike Sperzels which I've always found grainy.

The only full locking tuners with acceptable weight are the Sperzels. They are aluminium and they aren't too tight overall.

Then there are autolocking systems such as the vintage fender style gotohs. I didn't try those, I have a set float around somewhere.

BTW, 96.7% of the time the (non-locking) tuner is the least of the problems contributing to tuning instability.

Sperzels. But when I put them on my guitar, the tuning problems were just lessened. I changed my nut to graphtech and that made a huge difference.

I'm glad you mentioned Hipshots. They are also excellent good tuners and not too heavy. They make them staggered too.
Nothing is as good as Schaller IMO, but they are weighty.
Sperzels are light and excellent tuners. but they require a Jig to install.
From what Ive heard, I wouldnt mess with anything else, xcept maybe Vintage locking/staggered Gotoh for fender.
For what its worth,, I use string trees on all my Strats- two of them- Locking/ staggereds or not.
( and No, locking tuners are no substitute for FLoyd Rose- get real)

Re: Which set of Locking Tuners are best?

I like the Sperzels, though there are plenty of other kinds I haven't tried. I had a bad run-in with the Planet Waves on my first go, and I haven't tried them since.

Re: Which set of Locking Tuners are best?

I've used Sperzels, Schallers, and Tone-pros keystone knock-offs.

The Schallers are hands-down the best of the three. They are heavy, as someone mentioned above. The Sperzels felt cheap (and there is that damned peg instead of a screw). The Tone-pros are an OK replacement for keystones, but they are kinda lame

Re: Which set of Locking Tuners are best?

Been really happy with the sperzels i've used, but honestly you could probably find a used pair of fenders which are a nice trade of wait and ease of use.

If you get really lucky, you might be able to find a set of PRS's used.

Really, there isnt a whole lot to them, so any of the brands mentioned so far should be good. Look for used - some guys swap tuners like no tomorrow

Re: Which set of Locking Tuners are best?

ive had sperzels on my strat since it was new in 91. They work fine...but you gotta be careful not to drop the locking nut.

Re: Which set of Locking Tuners are best?

The Schallers are nice, I will admit, I'm just not so sure about the weight.

I love the feel of these Hipshots though... very smooth, no slack.
