Which tuners would you suggest me?

Re: Which tuners would you suggest me?

...wait, he is a tech and does not own nut files?????? That is one of the first tools a tech should own!

Run to the hills!

He's at the stage of... restructuring.
Long story short he used to work at other guitar shops where he did tech work, then became a tech over at your side of the pond, then came back here where he opened up a guitar shop of his own, gradually he picked up tech jobs again and now he's becoming more of a tech again and less of a store owner (he's going to close up). I'm pretty sure all of his tools were at his house. Maybe he's getting NEW files, didn't ask for the specifics.

The thing is, where I live there may be one, maybe two other guys that would be worth something.

Re: Which tuners would you suggest me?

If the nut is binding, you dont need files to fix the problem. A piece of sandpaper will do the trick if used properly.

Re: Which tuners would you suggest me?

That's why I said that the slot itself isn't right, it's not vertical but has an angle.
Something like this:
|/
(the characters in bold are the walls of the slot)

That's why I'm not sure just a sandpaper will do.
(Actually I have my doubts about the files too but that's another story...)

Re: Which tuners would you suggest me?

It's been my experience that any quality non-locking tuner will give you great service. I don't care for locking tuners as I like to have 2-3 rounds of string on the tuning post. If strings are installed properly and you have quality tuners, then tuners will not be your problem. I don't have any specific brand I use, I've used all of them at one time or another. Just wrap properly and you won't have tuner slippage problems.

Right on. I use stock tuners on my guitars. A couple of my tuners can be spun with two fingers, when not strung. But I have no tuning problems as I lock my strings by over wrapping, and wind it right. Tuners get blamed for most nut and bridge problems. I'd start there.

Re: Which tuners would you suggest me?

Oh man that sucks, so that guy ripped you off huh? I remember you were all excited because it was supposed to be a real custom piece the dude had built...sucks man....

Ermmm..a properly cut nut would help a lot too...and from the high end stuff (Grover, Schaller, Sperzel and Gotoh) anything will work great.

Re: Which tuners would you suggest me?

Y know, that's a so-so story. Before talking to him I checked everything I could.
In short he lied to me but he didn't rip me off. The guitar stock + all the things he put there + all the work he did to it cost way more than what I paid.

It's as simple as that, guitarists buy by brand.
He thought that if he said handmade he could sell easier than if he said Cort.
Funny thing is I couldn't care less, I like it to death and would have gotten it for sure even for more money than what I paid (which was a ridiculously low price).
That's why he told me that he'll give me the amp I've been wanting for a time plus a multi-effect pedal at cost plus he'll do anything I want to it for free.

If you look at it from a cold perspective that wasn't the best thing to do but, since I know the situation he was in I kinda understand why he thought he had to lie.
In any case now things seem to be getting somewhere.
If I get to sell the things I've wanted to and buy the amp and the pedal then I'll really be set.

Then maybe I can concentrate on getting really better with my playing and THEN getting a new axe, one that will be speced by me and built to my exact specifications.
However I must first know exactly what I want and be good enough to be able to justify such an expense...

Re: Which tuners would you suggest me?

I'll just say that I prefer the Ping / Rotomatic self-locking tuners. I liked them so much on my Showmaster that I got a set for my Lite Ash Stratocaster, and I'll probably get them for all my other guitars. I just prefer not having to wrench down on the knob.
