Which Warmoth Neck for my RG?

nuntius

Boogeyman of Tone
Ok my RG still needs a refret.. but I don't like the neck profile so I see it as an excuse to save up to get a nice warmoth neck for it (since it'll be my birthday in a month I'll probably have enough money to cover it).

Would the standard 24 fret extension work? Or would I also need to order the superwide neck?

I'd be getting a larger neck profile than the wizard, and maybe different woods to try and give the guitar a bit more body to its tone - which would you recommend?

I emailed them but since its sunday I don't know if they will respond.

Also I want to know your experiences with their necks - ie do they feel nice :newangel:

Thanks

Re: Which Warmoth Neck for my RG?

Its an early 90's one with the neck plate, not the one with the screws into the body :)

Re: Which Warmoth Neck for my RG?

I'll try to help ya here. I've played just about everything out there. I came across warmoth a while back and since then it's all I'll touch. nice concept with them is not only superb wood and craftsmanship but many many options to tailor your needs. best thing for you to do is check out some necks in your local music shop. narrow it down to what feels best in your hands. they offer several neck profiles along with nut widths to suit your needs. I agree with ya on the wizard neck..too thin for my taste.i need some wood to grab on to!
i like a solid maple neck or maple with an ebony board.tonally between the ebony board/maple and solid maple I heard no difference yet the feel was different.i found the most dramatic tone diff in body wood....makes sense since this is the bulk of your axe and what craddles your electronics.hope this helps! :burnout:

Re: Which Warmoth Neck for my RG?

Well they offer a wolfgang profile and I already I know I like that neck so it's a possibility.

The thing I'm most worried about is a snug fit with the overlap of the extra frets, since the extra wide necks seem to overlap the neck, but my ibanez neck doesnt do that - but it is very wide :P

Re: Which Warmoth Neck for my RG?

Nuntius, are you getting the Super Wide Fretboard option? If so, let me know how that turns out. It seems like it'd be pretty uncomfortable with a fretboard hanging over the sides of the neck! But I like wide necks too, so I might consider that.

Do you like the shape of the Wizard neck? I also hate how ridiculously thin it is, but I dig the shape. I asked them if they could make me a thicker Wizard, but they said no :yell: Wolfgang necks are freaking nice though.

Fender replacement necks fit on RGs?

Re: Which Warmoth Neck for my RG?

I don't believe a warmoth neck will do ya.........check your neck pocket width & lenght . warmoth uses 2 3/16 wide by 3"lenth by 5/8 deep. the scale they use is 25 1/2" . they use this same scale with the 24 fret extension only the trade off is ... no neck pup! check the pix i attached.actually got this from warmoths site. Ed roman can definitly do a neck for ya. He normally has ibanez replacement necks on hand. he could do ya a custom neck profile however it could be costly and i'm sure a good wait time.

Re: Which Warmoth Neck for my RG?

Well the thing is the Ibanez already has the neck pups where it should be for a 24 fret neck :)

Biu - it only hangs over the edges near the top of the neck i think

Re: Which Warmoth Neck for my RG?

I'm not sure if Warmoth and Ibanez parts are compatible or not. Unless your Ibanez is built to Fender specs in terms of the heel and neck pocket, there may be some problems. If they are compatible, go with the Wolfgang or SRV neck profile. I have guitars with both, and they are very comfortable...not too thick or too thin.

WOLFGANG Get The WOLFGANG , That neck rules, and go with a birdseye maple fretboard and neck :laugh2:

Re: Which Warmoth Neck for my RG?

Nuntius....measure your scale lentgh.if your ibanez is 25.5.your golden.if not your s.o.l.....your neck pocket also needs to be compatible!

Warmoth makes necks with a 24.75" scale as well....

that would be a shorter scale....don't think warmoth offers a 24 fret extension for that scale length. I'm pretty sure the rg's are closer to if not 25.5.

Re: Which Warmoth Neck for my RG?

From memory, the fretboard on Ibanez 24 fret necks have a small overhang, about the same as a 22 fret fender neck. Therefore the distance between the heel and end of the fretboard on the warmoth will be far greater then the Ibanez neck.
I could be wrong but my guess is that Warmoth do not have a neck that will work with a 24 fret Ibanez. Also, Ibanez are real funny about supplying new necks, I think you have to return the old one first.
Try http://www.lgmguitars.com/
This guy has lots of Ibanez experience and will build you a replacement neck to whatever specs you need.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you,

I've considered coughing up the dollars for a refret on my RG570 (which really looks nice after I did the BSB project), but the real issue for me is that I don't like the wizard neck.

I think it's going to cost you quite a few dollars for a new replacement neck of good quality. Is it the AANJ neck? You could take your chances on a used RG neck off ebay with so-called 'excellent frets', but that's a risky proposal. Another thing to consider is any neck on an RG that isn't an 'Ibanez' will probably kill your resale value.

So, I'll give you the same advice I've been telling myself :).

Firstly, sell the RG for a reasonable price (put a starting price on ebay you can live with if that's all you get) and together with the money you were going to use for the refret, pick up an EXP Wolfie or a special.

Now, one problem is your probably going to have some trouble finding a nice wolf in the UK at a reasonable price. You could import one from the states, but the shipping costs are huge, as are the customs fees if you insure it for the full value. Also, since Ed left Peavey everybody thinks their Wolfgang is a collectors piece which means you'll pay extra $$$.

LOL, good luck with whatever you choose to do :).

Re: Which Warmoth Neck for my RG?

i had an early 90s rg 550, and i also wanted to put a thicker neck on it.

i emailed warmoth and they said they're necks wouldn't fit the neck pocket correctly, and wouldn't intonate.
