Re: Who are the CRAZY GRETSCH FANS on the Duncan Board?

Me! Not that I can even think about affording one, but every time I see the Edge wielding his white Falcon/Penguin/whatever I have a bad GAS relapse. There's something about that clear, shimmery liquidness with that almost nasal "schroink" to the pick attack that I can't get enough of. Of course, a couple of good AC-30s running at full tilt doesn't hurt either.

Re: Who are the CRAZY GRETSCH FANS on the Duncan Board?

Anyone care to comment on the import models? Been thinking of getting one (since $2500 for a USA Gretsch vs $2500 for a USA Custom Shop Jackson = USA Custom Shop Jackson every time  )

Re: Who are the CRAZY GRETSCH FANS on the Duncan Board?

I've been a Gretsch fan for a long time. My dad has had a few over the years and I've always wanted one but never owned one of my own.

I imagine I'll get myself one, one day...either a 6120, a single cut Jet or a Mal Young model...thats a rockin piece right there!

Re: Who are the CRAZY GRETSCH FANS on the Duncan Board?

I've been aware of them for a long time but never took interest until hearing Brian Setzer, though I was familiar with The Living End prior to that. Perfect balance of fat, raunch, clang, and twang :naughty:. Such unique sounding guitars, which, like Rickenbackers, should have a place in the arsenals of most guitarists.

Too bad they're so expensive, and hard to get down here in Australia, so it keeps Gretsch gas at bay. I like the 6120s with simplified knobs and switcheroo, and the single cut Duo Jet. Of course, a Bigsby is a must for all the right wobbles.

My current consolation is the bridge pickup on my Ibanez having been wired out of phase, so in the mix positions I can get some twang and raunch. Since making and installing the Frankenbucker, the tone is more balanced and less harsh, so it's a decent approximation.

Re: Who are the CRAZY GRETSCH FANS on the Duncan Board?

OUCH! Scott knows of my crazy collection... And so I believe that he is giving me a difficult time in an attempt to drive me crazy, know that I am working in Hong Kong and most of my gear is in USA.

OK, here is my collection of Gretsch gear and original prices paid based on old receipts that I keep for insurance reasons!

Tennessean (Model 6120 $500 list, paid $235 used)
Country Gentlemen (Model 6122 $650 list, paid $ 325 used)
Nashville (Model 6119 $400 list, paid $300 used)
White Falcon (Single cut - model 6137, which was a stereo guitar that I played through a Wulitzer 7100 solid state amp that was converted to have (Fake) stereo output, note that this is not reissued model 7593)
1975 White Falcon (Double cut - model 7595)
White Penguin (This was a gift from my family, I do not know the price)

I have been wanting a Black Penguin for a long time.

And there is another late 60's single cut model with the green metal flake that I want, but do not know the model number for it. I believe that it is called the Jet Firebird or Silver Jet Firebird, but the color is called Cadillac Green. It has double Filtertron pups and Bigsby vibrato.

PS: All of these guitars were purchase in the late 60's and early 70's, when I used to play a lot of Chet Atkins style in the Mysticks (A Country & Western / Country Rock Band).

Gibson Les Pauls could be purchased at that time for around $380~$420 and they were not so popular and Gretsch are better sounding than Les Pauls.

Funny, how things change now a lot of players want either a Stratocaster, Telecaster, or a Les Paul.... (Darn it - Blame Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page)

Play a lot more blues and rock now....

None are for sale!

Re: Who are the CRAZY GRETSCH FANS on the Duncan Board?

I'd really like something similar to the Brian Setzer sig model, with perhaps a custom flame job (ie: Epi Flamekat) and a black single cut Jet. I'll take imports. I don't mind. The imports are equipped with the same pickups that come in the US models, and with my crappy hearing, I can't tell the difference.

You guys are reminding me of a Tennessean I played at a pawn shop down in Florida. It was all beat up, obviously 60's, but because of that the pawn shop worker claimed it was an obvious fake and it was marked at about 250. Had I had the cash, I would've snagged it in a heartbeat, but Meghan and I were dead broke. Instead, I did the right thing and took the time to explain to him what he had. He was so ecstatic. Hmmm...Think I might go pawn shopping today.

Re: Who are the CRAZY GRETSCH FANS on the Duncan Board?

I've had a couple of 60's Tennesseans, great sounding guitars. I lump Gretsch's in with Les Paul's. They both look and sound great but there's always something missing and I always sell them and return to my trusty Tele's!

Re: Who are the CRAZY GRETSCH FANS on the Duncan Board?

I used to work about a mile away from the original gretsch factory (60 Broadway, Bklyn, NY) and every so often, I'd walk past there to see what was going on in the rest of williamsburg. It says uptop it, Gretsch No. 4 (there is an even older gretsch building on S. 4th Street). Sadly, that area has succumbed to hipsters whose idea of gretsch is a big hollowbody, but with no connection to the presence Gretsch had from 1883 to the 1960s in NYC. The same goes for the old domino sugar factory on Kent Ave. (1853 to 2004). The Gretsch Building is now a 10 story high-rise apartment complex that has seemingly been eradicated of any of its old aura by its new landlords, the older gretsch plant on S. 4th is status unknown, and the Sugar factory is now a city landmark.

I love gretsches immensely, but it saddens me that NYC's original luthier business is now just an apartment complex for trust-fund greenwich village wannabes.

I never bonded with the sound of the Duo Jet, I don't like the pickups.

My first Tennessean was exactly like this one, case as well. I bought it in '81 at the old Ann Arbor Music Mart for $300, the Stray Cat's album hadn't come out yet and nobody wanted a Gretsch. I lived in Okinawa, Japan for 2 years while in the Marines and hung out at a really nice music store there. In '83 the Stray Cats were hot in Japan so I had an idea, I had my parents ship me the Gretsch and I took it into the store for them to check out. The look on the faces of the guys who worked in the shop was priceless, I've never seen such bulging eyes and dropped jaws before!

They immediately pulled out $1300 in US cash (without even blinking) and I walked away a very happy camper!!!

Yep I've got one - a gold sparkle electromatic pro jet.

Nothing like a bit of bling!

I REALLY want a Tennessee Rose, but they're quite a ways out of my price range.

The Electromatics are really great, but no lefties. :(
