Who uses a Solid State amp?

I`m just a bedroom jammer and somtimes I feel my tube amp isn`t cutting it for that situation , plus I never usually turn it up loud to get the power tubes cooking. I was wondering what solid state amps(w/Speaker Ext.) are out there that might work for me as far as a good clean and good distortion. I know I can`t expect miracles and find a solid state that sounds like a hot rodded plexi or 5150.

Re: Who uses a Solid State amp?

I have a Mesa Single Recto with 4X12 cab (not SS i know) for my apt and I can get the right volume out to get a decent sound. I've never turned this amp up past 3. As for solid state, if I had the cash to just dump on a SS amp I Would go for a Line6 Spider II 2X12 or the Spider II head and 4X12 cab. I really like that amp. It has some great sound and if you get the floor board it's a lot of fun to play with. More than I could use practically but fun none the less. Just don't have $800 to dump on an amp. I'd rather have one great sounding amp and multiple guitars than a even numbers of both.

Re: Who uses a Solid State amp?

im a "home jammer" and im pretty happy with my little fender bronco combo....
I wanted to get a tube before this , but even the 15 w blues junior sounds way too loud .

Re: Who uses a Solid State amp?

Well i plan on selling my marshall MG sometime soon and buying a Tube amp. I have my Roland Cube which is awesome for bedroom practise so itll be that and my big amp for gigs and jams! The Roland has a brilliant clean channel and my one (the 15 watter) has models for a light OD, Distortion, Metal, and Metal Stack (just a fuzzier scooped version of 'Metal'). Is perfect in my eyes for a good home practise amp.

Re: Who uses a Solid State amp?

If your going for a pretty cheap SS amp definitly try out the Roland Cubes as Mr Wolf said!By far the best small SS amp ive played, Nothing will beat it for relativley (as in not Tube Amp Loud) volumes!

Re: Who uses a Solid State amp?

I love my Tech 21 Trademark 60. It has great tones and features, and sounds good at bedroom or band volumes. It's a really excellent package for the price.

If you're only going to use it at home, the smaller Trademark 10 might be all you need. Haven't tried one of those but have heard excellent reports.

The Vox Valvetronix amp has been outstanding as a great bedroom practice amp and I've gigged with it several times...Priced right, has great tone and "feel" and has pretty cool effects..I bought the head and I either plug mine into it's matching 2x12 Vox cab or into my Marshall V30 4x12...Great amp.Love mine! The switch on the back lets you toggle between 1 watt,15 watt,30 watt,or 60 watt....The 120VTX is 60 watts per side(stereo)

Wow, I like the sound samples. That is a very nice sounding amp. I've gone back and forth on whether to get a bigger tube combo or SS combo than what I have now.

One more vote for the Roland Cube. I'm fixing to pick me up a cube 15 myself as soon as I save up the cash.

I'm thinkin about the Valvetronix myself. It's nice to hear some good words about other than from HC or MF reviews.

Does yours seem like it holds up really well?

Re: Who uses a Solid State amp?

I suppose im the only wierd one getting rid of my cube 15 for the bronco, I dont like modelling amps, i believe that makes me a SS purist? :laugh2:

Re: Who uses a Solid State amp?

I have a Fender Stage 160 SS amp. It has an awesome clean channel and the 160 watts makes sure it sounds good even at higher volumes. The gain channel is useless but with a multi-effects unit in front of it (I use a Boss ME-50) on the clean channel it's a great amp that does the basement jamming or small clubs.

Absolutely...

I consistently get good tone and great feel from this amp..I Like the versatility and the amp has alot to offer in usable, realistic amp models...The effects are pretty cool also, but I only use reverb, delay, and the treble booster mostly..The Vox and BF Fender models alone are worth the price of this amp.

I've gigged with mine and it's been through several 3 to 4 hour practices with my band..No problems at all.

Wonderful. I wonder what voltage is going across the 12AX7 in the power amp. I'm sure that's someone of a contributing factor, although it may be small since it's just one tube, but probably enough to warm it up and not be so "transistory".

I haven't played through one yet but plan on demoing a few of them here soon.

Re: Who uses a Solid State amp?

I always liked Crate for cheap solid state practice amps. I use a little 15 watter with DSP effects. I think it rules for the price (just over $100). You can't go wrong with Line 6 practice amps or Vox's valvetronics stuff either. I've always wanted to try Carvin's solid state 100-watt head.

Re: Who uses a Solid State amp?

I use a solid state. I own a Kustom Quad HD 100 and I'm a home jammer/sometimes I do stuff at school? Not exactly an awesome high gain amp. But I got the half stack for $600. It was a really happy bargain. One day I want to get a KRANK!!! :)

Re: Who uses a Solid State amp?

Im selling a roland cube to buy me a peavey, its a 60watt cube im selling for $300, you can checkout my post slot about it in my sig.

Its by far one of the loudest portable solid states on the market, pretty good tone, lots of effects and such. 1x12.

Re: Who uses a Solid State amp?

I just use little Fender Solid State combos around the house... I like the late 90's ones before this DSP BS....... Their new Solid State amps are noisey.... Sometimes i use a small Berhinger too..... I have different set ups to use at Home, At Rehearsal i have small tubes amps i leave there, and some louder larger tube amps for any shows i may do.......

I gave up a long time ago trying to get one amp to do everything...
