Who uses Loopers?

How any why?
I have one, casue I got it thinking it would be a good tool, and fun to use.
I cant really figure out how to use it all that much to its full cpability, since im not a techno guy, but even if it was easy to use, for some reason I dont see myself using it all that much.
What about you guys? Aside from some guys who specialize in looping, are they worth implementing into your playing ?

guys who play in one-man-bar bands use them.

I know a guy in a band signed to Nuclear Blast records that tours their asses off and plays only originals, and he had a looper, but he admitted to never using it on stage. He said he only used it for having fun once in a while.

I have a Boomerang III and use it all the time. It's an invaluable writing tool. It's so much easier to record a basic riff and then keep looping it to find what you're going to use for leads.

I have the Boss RC-3. While it is very good, I don't use it as much as I'd like to. I'd never bring one to a band practice or whatever, and sometimes dialing in what you want and getting things layered up perfectly can be a bit time consuming.

When I bought it, I used it to play a load of Maiden guitar harmonies, which was awesome. Now like That90'sGuy said it's mainly a writing tool for me; it's great for laying a basic part of a song down while you figure out all the melodies, or vice versa. I don't tend to write much, so that's why I don't use it as much as other pedals.

The other big thing I use it for is setting a little jamtrack of my own to improv along to, even if it is just a bit of percussive muted strumming; it's nice to have a bit of rhythm to practice with if you're bored of or don't have the use of a metronome.

I have several, and use them all the time in performances. With loopers, the manual is your friend- they usually have so many functions, you really miss out on what you can do if you don't know all it can do. There are 2 types of people who use loopers- ones that jam over static backing tracks and those that use them for live improvisations (rhythmic and non-rhythmic). Most looping devices are designed and used for static loops (jamming over a chord progression). I have a JamMan Solo for this and it works well. The other types of loopers, like the DL4, Boomerang, and Digital Echoplex Pro are really designed for live improvisations. Looping, cutting up the loop and rearranging it in real time. BTW, there is an excellent VST called Mobius which is an extremely powerful looping device for the PC.

I have a sound on sound looper function on my Boss ME-50B. This comes in handy for layering up parts on the Chapman Stick. Instant Crimson or David Torn backing track. :)

I have an older JamMan. I never used it live, only to play around at home. It's good fun. I have plans to use it for live performances for a duo acoustic act I do with a female singer. There are performers who use the RC-300 for multi-track looping. Using a small console to input 4 or 5 instruments (percussion as well), you can end up with amazing one-man-band performances. Lay down the beat with some sort of stomp pedal, shacker eggs etc, then the bass... You need to have a strong stage presence though for a one man band or duo to work.

I loaned my RC-2 out and will mess with it again when I get it back. I found it a little difficult to use live, and as simple as it is probably supposed to be, I found myself going back to the manual continually for the most basic operations .... but then, I'm a slow learner.

It is certainly a great practice tool. I used it mainly at home by "recording" the chord backing to whatever lead part I needed to work on.

I have a jman delay which I like alot. I only use the looper for saving new riffs and tunes and for soloing over them. I gave up on adding layering tracks because it only allows undoing one at a time in reverse order, which is a pita, especially in addition to the somewhat tedious interface that crams a ton of functions into as few buttons as possible, relying on hold times to differentiate between functions within once button. Deleted 50 saved songs by accident just by holding 4 seconds instead of 2, etc (or something like that).

So I don't get too fancy with the looper and just use it for saving one pass ideas, without layering. If live performance and layering were important to me, I'd likely get a more robust looper with the ability to selectively undo any track.

I think the delays and choices are pretty solid, I favor digital delays because I rarely play clean and don't want a muddy delay under higher gain, and being able to save 3 of them is great.

I sold my RC-2. I hated it.
It makes me realize I don't have enough talent/inspiration to make a decent loop.

I had an RC20 that I eventually got rid of. I used it as a practice tool pretty much exclusively. Since I can do the same thing with my computer, albeit not as quickly, I decided to use it as part of a trade I was making for an amp.

I used the RC2 for samples in between songs, or during a song. I had them pre stored and would kick it on when needed. I had to sell it a while back and I'll be looking to get another soon.

For live stuff I used a DL4(Now a timeline). Id usually hit a few chords, or notes, loop it and run the loop reverse/half time.

I have the JamMan stereo. I used to use it when I was in an acoustic duo. However I normally use it as a songwriting tool.

I have a Digitech JamMan that i paid $259 for a few years ago - I must have really wanted it.

I have used it 100% for f*cking around, 0% for anything useful :laughing:

Mine has a mic input so I loop vocals with it to, great for playing a song in your basement alone when you don't have a second guy to sing harmony accents or to sing "Whoooooooaaaaaa-ayyyyy-oooohhhhhhh!" on the chorus. Which is what every backup vocal to every chorus ever is.

I think I need to lay off the coffee

A guitarist I know uses his looper in his 3 piece to overdub lines over existing parts to create a wall of delayed guitar wash and it is very effective. Here is there song (live it sounds almost the same guitar wise in the intro and outros) http://chambersband.bandcamp.com

That RC-2 I had was pretty fun. I just like it for saving ideas and either soloing over rhythms or harmonizing leads.

Well, i have looper function on Roland Cube 40 and i think it's a great tool for practising at home. i played on some Slayer riffs when two guitars kicked in. first just play the guitar 1 riff, save it, and then play guitar 2 riff over it.. i think that function it's amazing for practicing at home. also i think to save some money for the real pedal loop function would be great idea, since i mainly play Blackstar HT-5 now for home practicing.:scratchch
