Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

Ayrton, I wished I lived by you. You are such a cool guy. Nice mod/build thread. It would be nice to have you as my neighbor, so I could hang out, grill brats, and learn how to work on guitars. Seriously, you've always offered good advice, and just are a cool guy all around. Definitely an asset to this forum.

Ya know, Chris lives close to me...we need to hook up sometime!!!

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

Well, since no one has bothered to reply to you, I'll say this:

I don't think Ayrton is planning on selling the guitar, and if down the line he does, I doubt he'll try to pass it off as a real Gibson. What can I use to back that? Just forum rep.

There's still many things that will break it if that guitar was sold as a Gibson. First, the finish is supposed to be a non-standard LPC finish. That raises red flags. Second, serial number. Third, CS case. Fourth, the original black paint is still inside the pickup and electronics cavities. Fifth and much harder to verify, metric measurement hardware.

Five out of five things that can be verified if bought in person. Four out of five things that can be verified with detailed pictures if bought online. Three out of five things that can be verified with regular pictures if bought online. (Past this point, if you're plunking down what a LPC costs with less evidence than that then you're just not being a smart buyer). Two out of five things that can be verified with just one picture and a message if bought online.

One thing that breaks the sale that can be verified with a simple e-mail to Gibson or a Google search if bought online.

this same issue came to my mind, and of course Ayrton wouldn't try to pass it off as an genuine Gibson.
But what's stopping the next person?
there are plenty of people who get duped by those chinese fakes. and those are truly horrendous forgeries.
this one, however, looks like its going to be MUCH closer to the real thing.

just saying. the next owner might not be as scrupulous as Ayrton.

There have been a lot of reasons why not, but very little in the vein of why.

This is so awesome it's not even funny. Methinks simply by viewing this my own wood carving skills have diminshed notciably. FML....

Because of the five reasons I stated. No matter how close he makes it look, there's tons of details that have little to do with the replica's accuracy in terms of aesthetic. I know if I grabbed a R9 and sanded off the serial number and put it in a different case, many people would not buy it.

Similarly, Ayrton's LPC with a dodgy serial number and an unusual refin color would make a lot of people pass on it.

I'm not saying nobody will buy it, I'm just saying that if they do it's because they pulled the trigger without actually doing their homework. People tend to do the homework when it's a big purchase like a $4000 guitar. That's why you see more people getting conned with Standards (not that they're cheap, mind you) and such, but it's very hard finding someone who bought a fake R9.

Before this thread goes spiraling off into a discussion of fake Les Pauls, let me say if you have ever held both a real Les Paul and one of the Chinese fakes, there is no way to confuse the two.

The people who get duped with the fakes are usually those who have never held a real one, or somehow convinced they can get a $2500 guitar for $500.

Now, the high quality replica Les Pauls that can be had are normally much more expensive than the real thing, and for good reason. Better wood, better build quality, and in most cases the closest mere mortals will ever get to a real 1959 burst.

What that has to do with me redoing an Orville, I am not really sure. I re stamped the original serial number into the headstock, and once it is finished, will look nothing like an "off the shelf" LPC anyway.

Some people just want something to complain about, and I read it all the time on the Les Paul forums, the tdpri, and Warmoth boards.

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

Hey man, if it comes out as good as we all think it will, I'd be happy to take it off your hands, though I doubt you'll be selling any time soon. Personally, I'd LOVE to see a goofball logo, like "Fibson" or "Pecker" up there on the hs, but that's just me. I tried to get my buddy over at KxK to build me something with an inlaid cocknballs but he wouldn't do it. What can I say? I'm a 5 year old.

I'd like to use the Epiphone inlay script to brand a DIY guitar "Eatme", or maybe "Eatmyass". (I'm undecided.)

Back on topic: Aryton, your skills are fricking certifiable.

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

You can bet your ass that I would do the "Gibson" inlay conversion if I was refinishing my Epi Japan '61 SG (same as on Orville, minus the name on the headstock). This guitar is a lifer for me. It has nothing to do with duping somebody.

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

I'm just amazed at how perfect the routing for the logo was! Doesn't Gibson do that by machine? Did you actually do that freehanded??? Holy Crap!

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

If you look close you can see the slightly darker boarder around the logo. That is the epoxy I used to fill up the gaps.

I just traced the logo, and then used my micro router to remove inside the lines. Glue the logo in, and then fill with black epoxy. Finally just scrape it flush.

Once it is painted black, the paint is removed from the logo, and then clear.

I didn't work on the LP today as I had some truck crap to do. I am actually working on three guitars at one time, so hopefully they will all go to paint at the same time.

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

Side markers done, ready to glue up the board.

All the pencil marks will go away once I scrape the binding to the final installed dimensions.

Still watching. A very entertaining build/mod. Keep up the good work.

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

Man I have to admit, when I first saw this I thought you were crazy for doing this to that guitar.... but you are doing an AWESOME job and I can't wait to see it now when its done because it is going to look freakin' sweet!!!! So Great job man!!!

Re: Who wants to watch me totally wreck a Les Paul Custom?

This is the best build/mod thread I've seen in a while. Keep up the good work, Chris.
