Wow, after all these years the G still tries to push SG as an alternative to a Strat ...... you gotta admire the conviction.

Back in the mid 60s, the strat was considered a cheap guitar because it had three pickups. Other cheaper guitars had three and some even had four. If it wasn't for Hendrix, you wouldn't be able to find a strat today because Fender was going to discontinue them due to lack of sales.

A strat is not defined solely as a guitar having three pickups.

right, but to a person who doesnt know any better they could see it as both having three pu's but look for one that suits them. id they like the strat they go with it, if they like the low weight of an sg they take that.

And yes its still gibson's competitor to the strat

Re: Whoa....new gibson sg with three single coils

I....don't think the SG was ever intended as a competitor for the stratocaster. It was originally Ted McCarty's concept of an improvement on the Les Paul design, and was supposed to be the successor to that guitar.

Despite this guitar having three pickups (which I'm pretty sure is a "guitar of the week" and hence a limited run of 400) the SG has almost always differed from the strat in every way two solid-body electric guitars made of wood can possibly differ.

Maybe I'm unaware of some vintage ad copy from the '60s portraying the SG as Gibson's answer to the Strat, but this is the first I've heard that.

Re: Whoa....new gibson sg with three single coils

it's not only hendrix, clapton too, jeff beck, i seen some other players during that time using a strat, joe walsh, blackmore, david gilmour stated once that was his "term" for getting into pink floyd, that they give him 300 pounds to buy his dream guitar, a fender stratocaster.

Hendrix just liked breaking them.
same with blackmore

funny how they were gonna discontinue it

Re: Whoa....new gibson sg with three single coils

Damn, what is that Firebird? Is that a new Gibson special run? Whatever it is, it's one of the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen... I'm stunned. :fing2:
It's guitar of the week #12

Actually, the SG was supposed to replace the Les Paul. The Firebird is Gibson's answer to the strat.

Many of the 60's rockers were using Gibsons and getting away from strats, not so much because strats were considered cheap, but more because Fenders were the guitar of choice of early 60's surf music; which was something the later 60's rockers did not want to be associated with.

What i meant was not that the sg was advertised as gibson's strat, but that it was used that way in the 60's on. A visible majority of artists basically used a strat or sg(or les paul) as their main guitar.

Re: Whoa....new gibson sg with three single coils

1960, Gibson experienced a decline in electric guitar sales due to their high prices and strong competition from Fender's comparable but much lighter double-cutaway design: The Stratocaster. In response, Gibson modified the Les Paul line. This 1961 issue Les Paul guitar was thinner and much lighter than the earlier models, with two sharply pointed cut-aways and a vibrato system.

Did not wanna hijack the thred. I did not just pull this out of my ass. I forgot where i first read it but it was an article in some guitar magazine. I still think that Gibson are using their SGs to keep their people away from Strats. That's all.
