So-Let me get this right right. WLH has a RCA5, but the seth has a A2, the 59 an A5, Pearly gates an A2. The reason I am butting in here is that I have
heard a lot about RCA5 really giving any pup a grittier touch. Would not the WLH be a #1 choice given the rough cast A5. there is so much positive feedback for years
on UOA5 AND RCA5 and of course UORCA5.
Just asking, s my 59/custom is great for my dull chambered basswood Strat, but my all mahogany LP jr. is bright, but even though the pickup, Seth Lover A5 is great, I am considering a pup with more "push and grit" as I posted a week ago. Had I known about the RCA5 in the WLH, my question might have been different. I know what I needed to know about "hand guided pups" and now the WLH seems to be perfect. uneven coil or not. Ytube Sound bites drive me nuts, so you guys are the best, most informed arbiter I know.
SJ....... I would have it unspotted, and zebra. Hence a custom order probably. To all who cannot here, potted pickups always sound "closed" to me. Pick your mystery word for potted vs. unpotted. No need for discussion on potted. my mind is always set on that.

I don't think a rough cast magnet gives a gritty quality. it's as if it smooths out the focused attributes of a polished magnet.

if you have any of the "more recent" 59 Model pickups sitting around, try a RCA5 magnet in there and listen to the difference. or if you've tried any of the older JB models as well as the newer ones, you'll notice how a lot of people consider the newer ones with the polished A5 to have a little boom in the lows and ice-pick in the highs. those differences would be why I'd suggest the rough cast smooths/balances things out a little.

I love the PG neck. It is easily my favourite neck bucker.
having said that, given that you have an axe with a set of PG's, Get a pair of WLH's and be done with it. They kill.

I have one of those on a Strat. Its nice. Oddly enough, I don't really mind the soldering portion, its the damn strings I hate dealing with. Everything I have, has locking tuners and the larger ga. strings don't mind being "re-locked", but the smaller ones seem to get too weak after being pinched in the lock more than once. Cant just use the extra length and unwind the extra string that was wrapped around the non-locking tuners for room to remove the PUs.

Oh well. Like I said. Its a commitment. Unless im totally unhappy with my decision, ill stick it out till a string change is needed. Besides I have a few boxes of #10s sitting around in case I don't.

I get it. I hate doing electronic work on a Strat. Get it all back together and one thing isn't right, or if you are deciding between 2 pickups. Blah. Serious PITA.

Yeah, but for me it's more of the pain-in-the-ass factor. And I hate soldering. And you never know you've f'd it up until it's all back together and you've gotta go back, jack, and do it again.

I always check with a multi meter first before assembly...

I never remove strings for pickup changes even in a strat - 15 turns to loosen the strings gives me the clearance in strats and LPs alike. For guitars with 22 frets and overhang and I need clearance for the pickguard I just turn the neck screws 10 turns counter clockwise and tilt the neck when the screws are loose. I can do a pickup swap in under an hour this way.

nah. not unreasonable. have the workbench all set up and ready to go. that's a solid goal.

did a swap from a set of Fishman Fluence Classics to Fishman Fluence Modern in less than 13 minutes with the coil split features.

I am impressed. That is awesome!
It took me an hour to return my original pickups in my El Maya and do coil splits on each and phase reversal on the bridge. Mind you they are single hookup wire with outer braid as ground so I had to add a coil split lead to the serial link wires between the coils and for out of phase I soldered the hookup wire from the bridge pickup to one of the middle terminals of my push pull then tinned it's opposite terminal, tinned the braid, insulated the braid with heat shrink tube and held the exposed end of the tinned braid to the tinned push pull terminal and applied the iron to the the braid for the solder to flow from tinned terminal into the braid as if I was soldering it to the back of a pot. Darned fiddley but worth the effort as it's now got all the fancy features I wanted. Just waiting on my fillister screws, spacers etc to see how going from super 80 oversize ceramic to A8 bridge A4 neck works out with these fillisters.

Let's see how long it'll take to put my APH1s in my Dearmond - which will have series / parallel on each pickup and phase reversal on the neck... I bet I can't get anywhere near your times.

I don't have a workbench set up at home all the time (but I am not currently working on any of my guitars). Just setting a place to work takes 1/2 hour.

50 minutes to swap out old mini filtertrons for APH1s in my Dearmond with series parallel and out of phase. Slow I know, but quick for me. But I killed my mini toggle for out of phase so just using a regular size dpdt toggle instead

Haha, yeah. But to be fair, I am happy with all of my guitars' sounds. My bass pickups I might experiment with, though. Those Apollo Jazz dual coil ones sound great.
