i mean it's not my guitar, but it does have one pickup...

Re: who's rockin' a single pickup guitar? let's see it!

I don't plan on stripping it entirely, the finish on the back and sides is really decent, the picture actually looks worse than it is. Odd duck it is, it's basswood with a thin birch laminate on the top, no idea why. There's a couple deeper pits where the birch chipped out, I'm just gonna fill them, they're not very deep. If I was going to totally refinish it I would do exactly what you said, take that birch of entirely. I'd probably even slap a maple cap on it. It's always a fallback option.

Ah, my misunderstanding. I thought you planned to put veneers on the front and back.

They probably put a thin sheet of birch on to help hide the glue joints on the basswood. Even solid color finishes often reveal the joins in the body as slightly raised lines.

Here's an Epi Jr I got recently after selling a couple of spare pickups - added some Wilkinson Imperial tuners and a Rio Muy Grande pickup - this has a push/pull coil tap - and it has a Leo Quan bridge with fine tuners - Gretsch volume/tone knobs Mark Cerlock wired it up for me. This is a big sounding guitar with plenty of burning treble!

My Epi G400. Custom 8 pup.

It's funny, but I play on her more often than on my Gibby.

I'm thinking about throwing there Hot Soapbar and replacing the mags for A8, making it also look like old junior with batwing pickguard.

. The pickup that is installed is from the Seymour Duncan custom shop a 78EVH made to fit on a p-90 plate complete with custom made dog ear cover, so there is no extra routing. You can pull the tone control up and its like bypassing the contol and you a going direct to the jack.

I know I have posted this guitar before but for the sake of the thread why not again? Technically this is a two pickup guitar seeing it has a piezo but aesthetically it is a single pickup axe. Plays like a dream and sounds heavenly.

I've got a bunch of single pickup Ibanez guitars myself these days, if you don't like the look, take a junk pickup, pull the magnet out, and toss it in the neck position. No string pull, and it makes a decent filler. You can even sell the magnet or swap it into something else. ;)
