why actives for a guitar?

just wondering why some prefer the EMG or live wires stuff over a passive set?
what is the advantages of using actives?

Re: why actives for a guitar?

I disagree with them making a sh*t guitar sound good... they do have more of an overpowering character than passives, but if the guitar sucks, they aren't gonna save it :D My preference for EMG has nothing to do with them being active, per se, but simply because of the tonal difference. No different than why I like the Invader more than the Custom Custom... I simply like how it sounds more.

two words.... clarity, articulation. Until you try an EMG you won't understand.

so no matter what the 81 will be tighter, have more clarity, more power/roar
than the duncan distortion?

I just got rid of the EMG SA set w/ mid range boost this past weekend that I've had for 18 years. I only used them for reduced noise while playing in bars that had neon signs in the 80s.

They are very clean (a "Hi-Fi" tone), but have no warmth. EMG actives are to a good Duncan passive as solid state is to tubes. They're awful for classic blues or rock, but if your thing is metal or hard rock, they might sound OK.

They are the quietest pups I have used though.

Re: why actives for a guitar?

If you're curious, try an EMG 85 in the bridge of one of your guitars and you will understand. Imagine an extremely high output pickup without hiss, hum, or unwanted feedback.

They WILL feed back if you make them, but no weird squeels or anything.

Re: why actives for a guitar?

Some will say because they are quiet, others will say because of the output, others because they play metal.......i use them for two reasons.....the first and most important reason is that i prefer the eq (of the emg85) better than any other pickup i have tried(active or passive). They also seem to offer more sustain......i know that sustain is based on the guitar and not on the pickup but when i replaced the JB with the emg85 im my strat the notes seemed to sustain longer.......

I prefer EMG for both the way they sound and their purcussivness during palm mutes.

Indeed the 85s eq is just right on. I don't know what it is but it has that low end dark punch that every other pickup lacks.

Same here. For heavy metal stuff, this is the tone I prefer. Not a flexible as some other pups, but it does nail that heavy metal tone that you hear on alot of recordings and live stuff.
