Why agathis wood is so hated??

Re: Why agathis wood is so hated??

What is paulownia wood?? What kind of wood is that??

I wanna answer dom is in bed.

Its a tree that grows in 4 years and is ready to harvest. The wood is super sustainable but it's extremely light and incredibly soft. Good for something but i wont be using it again.

I have wings of it on this.

How about the tone?? Is it good?

Re: Why agathis wood is so hated??

Since I believe that 99% of guitar tone lies in pickups, effects and amps, then YES. In fact, you have proven it yourself with EMGs in your agathis guitar.

Yes, agathis is hated cause it is strongly associated with cheap guitar. The supply is abundant in Asia so guitar factories like Cort and Ibanez making cheapos like GIOs and RG350s are able to put affordable price tag on their products cause the raw materials are cheap. And normally, cheap = low quality.
Yeah, I believe you're right

So is it the fault of the factory to make such crappy guitar involving agathis??

Re: Why agathis wood is so hated??

I bought a cheap agathis Cort X-1 for my kid years ago. I play it way more often than he does lol..it's one sweet sounding axe!

Re: Why agathis wood is so hated??

True. I have heard so much smack about basswood. My Rondo Explorer copy is basswood. I hear about it more than Agathis. I guess the fart gods told Leo Fender and Gibson about the magical fart woods to use. Lol.

Not to debate, but you don't think the fretboard material makes more of a <1% difference?

I see it all as a combination–like mixing drinks or cooking. Sure, you can make brownies using water but I prefer to use milk instead. Both will produce brownies just one will be softer and better tasting to me. Maple and Rosewood are both largely used on Strats–on a Strat both will get that typical Straty tone/feel. But they will have differences. I play differently on a Maple board than I do on Rosewood–Maple is snappy/poppy and I tend to play harder on a Maple board.

I love the JB in everything but Basswood (and I love Basswood, use a Screamin Demon in it instead of a JB.) Some guys can't jive with the JB in Mahogany.

And I hope you are just talking about Electrics–Acoustics definitely have large differences in tone from the wood ;)

I agree with this especially considering the aversion to Basswood by tone snobs. Quite a few see it as a cheap import wood...if that were true then why are great guitarists such as Joe Satriani and Guthrie Govan sporting the wood?

As already mentioned, Leo Fender used Alder because it was cheap and in large supply.

Re: Why agathis wood is so hated??

Wood isn't a parameter. It's a probability cloud.

Re: Why agathis wood is so hated??

I'm pretty sure there's good Basswood as well as bad Basswood. I doubt a Suhr uses the same type of Basswood as the one you'd find in a cheap Ibanez RG350. I think my RG570 sounds and sustains just fine.

I bet it's the same case for Agathis.

yeah thats obvious and its not normally one tree is good and one is bad its the area of the tree the slab comes from.

Re: Why agathis wood is so hated??

Okay so basically when you have the will to build a great guitar using agathis then it would be great right?

With the right builder, agathis would be indistinguishable from most other woods when blindfolded. Properly dried wood in the hands of a skilled builder is the only important ingredient. People think pine sounds good. If pine can be a good guitar wood, anything can be. Let a skilled builder pick out the pieces of agathis he wants to use and it will be a good guitar. Give premium wood to a hack and it will be a terrible guitar.
