Why all the Digitech hating?

I just don't get it. I own a Digitech GNX3 and a Death Metal Distortion, and I love both of them. I don't get much buzz or hiss from my Death Metal, and when I put an EQ next to it, it sounds as smooth as a freshly oiled guillotine. Before you pass me off as not knowing what pedals are out there, I've used a Moss Metal Zone. I hate it, sounds like hitting an aluminum sheet with a hammer. I've used the DS-1 and the Mega Distortion. Neither of them give me the response I get with the Digitech stompbox. I've used quite a few classic distortion pedals out there, and I keep falling back to my beloved Death Metal. As for the GNX3, there are no more than ten presets that I don't absolutely adore. I'm challenging all you Boss lovers out there to tell me what I'm smoking; maybe fill me in on what I'm missing. Maybe there's something wrong with me because I don't think I should pay a hundred dollars for single effects, like pitch shifting and phasing, but the GNX delivers for me. Haven't ever had a problem with it.

So please, tell me. Why all the Digitech hating? Are they really that bad?

Re: Why all the Digitech hating?

When your digitech stops working well before it should then you'll know.

Seriously...I've own three pieces of digitech gear that don't work like they should anymore. My bandmate has a floor processor that has been nothing but a huge pain. I wouldn't add a piece of Digitech gear to my rig if they paid me to put it there.

Now my Boss gear has NEVER let me down.

But if it works for you great.

Re: Why all the Digitech hating?

Then there's the tone argument. I'm sorry, but no-one out there has a hope of convincing me that the GNX series sounds good. Acceptable? -maybe. Giggable? -possibly if it was an emergency and the only thing available. But I've tried those things, including building patches from the ground up, and they just don't do it for me. I think they're aimed at younger players who want versatility at a low price, not experienced gigging musicians.

I'm not totally anti-digitech, though. The whammy pedal is a classic and I'll be buying the synth-wah pedal sometime soon.

Re: Why all the Digitech hating?

Digitech's GNX series sound OK, but, IMHO, it just doesn't look good when compared to Boss' GT series as far as sound, reliability and ease of use is concerned.

The old Artist preamp was good, but my GT-6 and GT-8 simply blow it away. ;)

Re: Why all the Digitech hating?

I don't know the stompboxes or current products, but I still own an old GSP2101 - still one of the best preamps IMO. Very versatile and 1a effects

Re: Why all the Digitech hating?

My main piece of guitar processing gear is admittedly archaic: It's a GSP-5 (yea, I'm THAT old!). Still working even after 20 years. So, I don't get the negativity towards Digitech, either. If it works for you, then it works!

Re: Why all the Digitech hating?

I've had my GNX3 for 3 years now with no issues. For what it is I'm happy with. It works well thru my computer speakers for the purpose of recording to CakeWalk when I'm songwriting. It works well as a multi-effect processor when playing thru the amp (though I prefer individual pedals).

One issue I do have with it is it doesn't sound very good thru a PA at jamming volumes. I've worked with Digitech customer support and been thru the manual numerous times....but it just sounds like crap when used for that purpose.

Re: Why all the Digitech hating?

only peice i've ever really gone 'i WANT that!' from them is the whammy, or that new delay pedal they have.. i think their single X-series pedals sound quite good!

saying that, digitech sometimes represent everyone's worst prejudices about about modelling and multifx units, their multifx's are usually made of plastic, colour your tone like crazy, and have the ability to sound like total cack :laugh2:

then again, boss stuff can sound awful sometimes, but it's easier with digitech :)

Re: Why all the Digitech hating?

I like the DigiDelay.....that's about it.

The Whammy that was made by someone else for Digitech is pretty good. The ones made by Digitech kinda sucks in comparison.

Re: Why all the Digitech hating?

I don't think it's just Boss lovers that dislike DigiTech...

I suppose I don't mind them, but every piece of their gear I've tested or played on has seemed really flimsy and just didn't sound good.

Re: Why all the Digitech hating?

hey, if it works for you, who's to say anything against it ... enjoy and ignore naysayers ... record a hit record with it and kids'll be lined up around the block to buy em ... and leave room for your tone tastes to change the longer you play ...

cheers

Re: Why all the Digitech hating?

Back in the day I had a Digitech overdrive that would either not turn on or turn off. My boss pedal worked perfectly even with all the abuse it took.

Re: Why all the Digitech hating?

Digitech makes some great FX units. I used my RP-20 strictly for effects and it sounded great....the noise gate wasn't bad either.

Re: Why all the Digitech hating?

The only digitech I want is the Whammy, I have owned a few digitech products and didn't like 'em so that's enough to make me stay away from most of their products, but I still try to keep an open mind if something new is introduced.

Rock On :13:

BWAHAHAHAHA :laugh2:

I've gotta agree tho. I haven't bought anything from DOD/Digitech in 13 years probably. But DOD (back then Digitech was new and just an attempt to get away from the negative stigma of the DOD name) had a very poor reputation (justifiably so) in those days. Not only was quality/durability horrible, but so was the sound.

I've been hearing ALOT of great things about the Bad Monkey OD pedal (even from Digitech naysayers), and admittedly the sound sample on the MF site is VERY appealing, and the price is phenomenal, but I'm just so leery of the brand I can't pull the trigger.

The ONLY DOD pedal I ever liked was the 250 pre-amp. I had that, the American Metal, 55 Distortion, Overdrive, Chorus' (actually the first Stereo Chorus wasnt bad), Compressor, flanger, delay, octaver, volme/wah and another distortion I cannot recall and they all were trouble durability-wise or just sounded pitiful when I got them home and actually played through my amps/with the band.

Boss has had it's share of Dogs, but for every one of those dogs they have 10 pedals that RAWK. I don't like the MZ, DS1 (unmodded at least), Turbo OD, or the old Digital Metalizer, but thats about it. My 15-20 year old chorus',phasers, delays, and SOD pedals have taken a serious beating, still sound good, and work like the day I bought 'em.

That said, there's so much more on the market these days, I'll be looking around at everything when I get the dough to get a new phaser, OD, and chorus. I'm not BLINDLY loyal to Boss, but they have always done me right.

Re: Why all the Digitech hating?

The one Digitech pedal I ever bought was a WH-2 Whammy pedal for $129. As soon as I bought it, it sucked the tone out of my amp. After a month, it stopped working properly and would inexplicably turn itself off after 5 minutes of use. The adaptor outlet was weak and always came undone, and it was heavy.

I threw it away after it screwed up one practice and swore that I'd never buy anything from Digitech again. Biggest waste of money ever.

Re: Why all the Digitech hating?

I have used a DOD FX 65 Chorus pedal for about 7 years...yes, the same pedal. I like it. I use it for acoustic or for the acoustic channel on my Parker Nitefly.

Even though I know most people love them, I don't care for the Boss Chorus. I prefer my DOD.
