Why are the 2017 LP Tributes so cheap?

Why are the 2017 LP Tributes so cheap?

Satin finish for one thing. Second is they need to regain market share that's being lost to PRS.Also maybe it doesn't have neck and body binding

I'd take satin over gloss any day. I think I'll pull the trigger.

It's a Studio Faded dressed up as a goldtop and nobody has bought a new Gibson since 2014 so they actually built things people want to buy this year.

Re: Why are the 2017 LP Tributes so cheap?

Just expect to spend another $100 to get a proper setup and lower the nut slots when you get it- the recent below $1400 Gibsons seem to play nowhere as nice as the recent Gibsons over $2,000, which is nothing a good tech can't fix for about $100

Re: Why are the 2017 LP Tributes so cheap?

The Tributes were always under $1000. They were around $699 - $799 when they came out. They used to have a tribute for each era with different specs. Now it appears they've settled on satin solid finishes, a set of 490s, thin 60s neck, and weight relief. The worst of all Gibson options. And now they are $899+ ... that's a price increase, on top of the corners cut.

Re: Why are the 2017 LP Tributes so cheap?

it Doesn't matter..

buy them up now, as the used market is already selling them for 550-750.
which means that once everyone finds out just how close they really are to a "Standard" in Construction...
they will get bought up fast and the new "modding idea" which has already taken hold in the market.. will make their prices jump by $500.

it REAL easy to convert these to Standards, if you have the tools and know how.

Re: Why are the 2017 LP Tributes so cheap?

the new Studios SUCK. they have serious feedback issues from the chambering and weak sounding pickups

We have 3 used LPJs at the store here and 3 used Studios,
I and everyone thats heard them, Will buy the LPJs over the Studios any day.

I don't know it its just a Model year thing.. but the LPJs seem to have solid backs with no chambering that I can tell.

^This^. I liked the idea of the different era models because they offered some different neck profiles and features. I think the 50s Tributes for example had the 59 neck. The Tributes are (or were) multi piece bodies, thin satin finishes and the backs and necks aren't grain filled and sanded smooth (not totally anyway). No binding either. At least they weren't up until this year ... I don't know about the 2017's other than the pricing is about the same. There are definitely corners cut and features left out compared to the higher price Paul's. And, I've seen a few that probably shouldn't have left the factory, but that seems to be the Gibson way. There are also some that are relatively well done. To be fair, the majority probably are, maybe needing only minor tweaking (nut, fret ends ...). Whether the sub 1k Paul's are a good value relative to what else is out there is up to the buyer. I'd be watching for stupid deals of the day on last year's models if I were in the market for a cheap LP. Then again, maybe those deals have already come and gone.

I'm indifferent to the satin finish, and it also comes in honey burst. Pickups do suck, I would have preferred the 61 tribute pickups to 490R&T. And it has the 90's style 9 hole "swiss cheese" weight relief which IMO is better than chambered. Also I have small hands and prefer the 60's neck to the 50's profile.

Are they for sure, 9 hole? Because Gibson has been hinky about those descriptions. They aren't always accurate. I've got a 2013 70's Tribute that I picked up last year, NOS. I saw descriptions on that model ranging from Traditional, Modern and "Proprietary" weight relief. I have no idea what type of weight relief it actually has other than being almost certain that it isn't chambered. I don't hate all chambered guitars, I'm just saying that if I didn't want a chambered LP, I wouldn't put all my faith solely in Gibson's description of the type of weight relief.

Re: Why are the 2017 LP Tributes so cheap?

Admittedly, that's from the Sweetwater description on that guitar.

Case in point ... I just checked the Gibson website and the 2017's aren't even listed yet. ;)
Seriously though, definitely something to research beyond the basic descriptions if one doesn't want a chambered LP.

Re: Why are the 2017 LP Tributes so cheap?

Hey all -

I'm keeping an eye out for the 2017 LP Tribute, either in faded honeyburst or goldtop. I like a satin finish...it doesn't feel 'sticky' to me. My only concern is that the 'slim-tapered' neck on these models may be too thin for me. Earlier this year, I ordered online (which I don't like to do) a 2016 LP Faded Cherry model (satin finish...pores not entirely filed, 59 rounded neck, Burstbucker Pros). I really liked the neck profile (it was in between a 50's rounded and a slim-taper) and everything about the guitar except perhaps the Alnico 5 pups seemed a little too bright. Unfortunately, I had to return the guitar for a refund bc of fret buzz that I could not reconcile regardless of set-up efforts. I think the neck had a bit of twist/warp to it that couldn't be corrected.

There's not too many of the 2017 LP Tributes in any of my local music stores or online right now. I'm hoping I can find a few in local music stores to play, and perhaps get lucky and find a good one. I did read one review that said the neck thickness was thinner than a 50's rounded but not as thin as a 'slim-taper'. I sure wish Gibson would have put the '59-rounded' neck profile on this guitar...that would make it perfect for me. Can anyone comment on the neck profile of the 2017 LP Tributes??

I don't have much experience with the 490R/490T Alnico 2 pups. I have some vintage output A3 HB pups on two Ibby AR guitars which I assume would be very similar to the 490s. Guess I'll search the forum for opinions on the 490s next.

Re: Why are the 2017 LP Tributes so cheap?

Man...I don't even know how to pick out a F#^king Les Paul anymore.

Thankfully, they are getting better. They're really confusing.

Re: Why are the 2017 LP Tributes so cheap?

What is to good to be true is an epi LP std with Seth Lover's in it for half that. Gibson, unlike Fender and Squier, has let Epiphone turn out world class instruments at reasonable prices. With Gibson these days me thinks 50% of what you pay is for the logo.

And the rest is for the little old ladies to scrape the bindings.
