Re: Why are the 2017 LP Tributes so cheap?
The old faded were all mahogany, these have a maple cap. I've read they have a "multi piece top" I read that as it having a 3 or 4 piece top. I've refinished a few of the 70s models with the terrible 3 piece pancake bodies, andthey had 3 or 4 piece tops, it made them absurdly heavy.
As to them not selling; gibson brought that all on themselves and I have no sympathy for them. Beyond just the completely inconsistent build qualities, they've made some very questionable design decisions. Giving them all active boost for a while, those stupid robot tuners, and their biggest "WTF are they thinking" moves; making all the connections for he switches, pickups and pots circuit board mounted was just a completely asinine. That screams "cheap" to me. It serves them right if people decide they would rather buy an older use models, especially with the annual large price jumps.
And I'd say it's more of that than people deciding to get a PRS.
I talk to the reps from PRS all the time, and they're not breaking any sales records themselves. The cost of the average Custom is over $3000,which is just too much out of the average guitar players budget. You can get a Les Paul AND a Marshall head for the cost of one PRS.
Plus to someone looking for the Gibson tone, you're not going to get it from a PRS,even with their "LP inspired" SC245/stripped 58 or McCarty.
