Why are the 2017 LP Tributes so cheap?

Re: Why are the 2017 LP Tributes so cheap?

A friend of mine bought a 2017 Gibson Les Paul Faded T - Worn Brown, this is a FAN-TAS-TIC guitar, awesome ! She sounds incredible,

Have a look,

Blotchy stain job inevitable when try to put a dark stain on the maple cap. Must look good to most people but for me blotchy stain looks unprofessional and a painful sight on such a beautiful piece of wood.

You should consider getting an LP Studio which I find to be a great playing and sounding guitar. My 2008 LP Studio is fully chambered and it has a great woody tone to it. I bought it used at a local music store and I wasn't even planning on buying a guitar. I tried quiet a few LP's in the store and when I picked up and played the Studio, I knew I had to have this guitar! The pick up combo is 490R and 498T and they sound perfect.

The Tributes were always under $1000. They were around $699 - $799 when they came out. They used to have a tribute for each era with different specs. Now it appears they've settled on satin solid finishes, a set of 490s, thin 60s neck, and weight relief. The worst of all Gibson options. And now they are $899+ ... that's a price increase, on top of the corners cut.

I guess it is a matter of opinion. I love Satin over Gloss any day, I feel it lets the guitar "Breath" and brings out the tone. I prefer the Alnico II 490's over the other pickups for their smoothness but yet also have a nice top end and growl. 60's neck is fine with me...I like the 50's Rounded more but the 60's is comfy as well. Weight Relief? I LOVE it...who wants to play out 3 nights a week for a couple of hours with a 10 lb les paul? So...all the things I like about a Les Paul and in an affordable package. This is an easy decision.

Cheap is a relative term. I'd like a Gibson one day but I'll have to settle with Epiphone and swapping pickups.

I think the idea that satin finish has different sound than gloss finish is in your head. I've taken the finish off one of my guitars and it honestly sounds the same.

Re: Why are the 2017 LP Tributes so cheap?

The old faded were all mahogany, these have a maple cap. I've read they have a "multi piece top" I read that as it having a 3 or 4 piece top. I've refinished a few of the 70s models with the terrible 3 piece pancake bodies, andthey had 3 or 4 piece tops, it made them absurdly heavy.
As to them not selling; gibson brought that all on themselves and I have no sympathy for them. Beyond just the completely inconsistent build qualities, they've made some very questionable design decisions. Giving them all active boost for a while, those stupid robot tuners, and their biggest "WTF are they thinking" moves; making all the connections for he switches, pickups and pots circuit board mounted was just a completely asinine. That screams "cheap" to me. It serves them right if people decide they would rather buy an older use models, especially with the annual large price jumps.
And I'd say it's more of that than people deciding to get a PRS.
I talk to the reps from PRS all the time, and they're not breaking any sales records themselves. The cost of the average Custom is over $3000,which is just too much out of the average guitar players budget. You can get a Les Paul AND a Marshall head for the cost of one PRS.
Plus to someone looking for the Gibson tone, you're not going to get it from a PRS,even with their "LP inspired" SC245/stripped 58 or McCarty.

Mr. Madison, what you have just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

:bigok:

man apparently these new Tributes suck, so glad I didn't get one....

Mine is extremely well made, personally I like the satin/faded finishes for how quickly they feel broken in.
