Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

As far as a tool of self-expression, you are right. At least 30 years ago there were guys testing the boundaries of guitar playing. However, now, that doesn't happen as much. To most people, modern guitar playing is distortion + fast shredding(+ or - nostalgia) = expression. There certainly are people who express themselves differently than that formula, but the industry is content with pushing that formula on guys *and* girls. I want more from my artists, but I had to realize long ago that I am not the mainstream.

^^ Might have been true of the 80's man..

Modern guitar playing is distortion + ridiculous downtuning (chugga chugga chugga) = tuff guy angst..

or it's tight pants/hipster + bugger-all distortion = retro awesomeness.

..either way, solo's (let alone shred) are hardly involved/trendy at all.

And how is shred "formulaic" anyhow? EVH, Mclaughlin, DiMeola, Timmons, Johnson, Yngwie, Friedman, Jarzombek, Vai.. they're all individuals/innovators & all of them "shred" without sounding remotely similar...or having remotely similar styles/techniques.

I haven't gotten into anything much past the 90s, so I'm not up to date on the latest trends.

Are you telling me that the "dude, solos suck" attitude still prevails (from the grunge 90s)?

If so, they suck. Anybody who lives by that rule.

Why?

Because in reality, people who believe that or say that are too incompetent or lazy to wank out a solo.
It's their way of trying to make a "legitimate" excuse for their poor playing skills, and a way to vent their
jealousy (in a passive-aggressive way) of those who can solo.

I'm just shocked that that attitude is still around today; 25 years later. What a bunch of lazy bums.

There's some rockers out there still layin' down the solos. I don't think the solo will ever die. It's the ultimate form of expression on an electric guitar. Sure, there is still a lot of modern music out there without solos but there's some coming out with some decent to great solos as well.

I saw a group here in Greece about 3 months ago now who had a solid guitar player... until he tried to play a solo. It was an epic fail. It was a big disappointment to me because other than that his portfolio was solid for the evening. I can definitely appreciate players who have worked hard to craft their music theory knowledge to bind with their expressive artistic side to create great solos. Practice, practice, practice.

Hey, I like your formulas better! Modern shred is formulaic. No one is breaking boundries like Dimeola (I am seeing him live tomorrow!!), Holdsworth, EVH or McLaughlin. The point is, if there is a 'formula' which results in the same stuff being released over and over, it doesn't inspire new creators of art, unless they have the attitude of 'i am not putting up with this, there has got to be another way'. Expressing yourself, male or female shouldn't sound like anyone else, but somehow it does.

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

You're just thinking of genres where the guitar is prominently displayed, but outside of EDM or hip hop, guitar is still used in everything from wimp rock to indi to country, all the bands from the 80's and 90's that still make records, and on and on, all serve as potential incentive to inspire someone to take up guitar. The amazing thing about guitar is that if can allow a singer to accompany themselves with full chords, is more percussive, easier to learn and orders cheaper than a piano, so thinking in terms of "guitar" genres, or guitar solos, is like looking at a vast landscape through a straw.

Even hip hop is using a lot of guitar these days.

Yeah, as far as the "mainstream" stuff goes it's all metalcore &/or alt-rock..at least in the States. But as Snakeaces said some of those guys are actually starting to throw in a decent solo or two as they progress/get more instrumentally proficient (still not my thing lol). There's actually a lot of great newer stuff out there though hard-rock/prog/fusion/metal-wise....it's just not as much in the spotlight I guess lol.

Totally agree with the other stuff you said..long live the guitar solo!!! :D

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

This is more interesting for being achievement-level shallow.

That's a sad thing about guitar, it's often looked at as a means to an end, the end being rock stardom rather than as a means of self-actualization. When words can't express how you feel, there's guitar, and no instrument has a bigger vocabulary of expression that the guitar, especially electric guitar, with all it's various tonal colors, whammy bars and other physical modifications, the use of slides, various plectrums, effects, and so on. I think most of us who use a guitar for this purpose now originally got into it hoping to be in a band, but it ended up being fulfilling it's own right.

Here's an idea for you guitar marketing departments, sell guitars as a way to express one's self, and not just as a girl getting rock star fantasy toy, and hey, maybe the fairer gender would even find more appeal in that.
I think somebody hacked DreX's account. He's making a lot of sense lately.

It's simply that when it comes to the topic of cheap vs expensive guitars, people lose their f'
ing minds.

Of course it's the people who do not share your opinion on the matter who lose their minds, right?

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

I'm incompetent, yet I still wank out solos.

Projection is an interesting defense mechanism.
