Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

Dunno about that... he has chris of arabia on ignore... have you ever seen chris be anything but cordial to anyone?

I never have. Maybe DreX is a bit too quick on the trigger or confused because I've never seen Chris battle DreX.

That's a good point. I shouldn't take credit for a simple omission... I try to be cordial (it's why I've been asked to be a moderator for other forums) but still make a point.

:8: what'd I do? I wouldn't mind, but I'd never dream of calling someone a complete cock....

My wife has called me that...

She also tried to play guitar. She just didn't find the joy in it that I do. Which is fair enough, I don't figure that to be a gender thing.

I ended up inheriting her OLP MM1 as such. LOL

And I find a way back to the topic. LOL

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

Mrs of Arabia had a guitar once - strictly speaking, she still has in a way, but it's now the self-assembly variety...

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

I asked my girlfriend the question as to why she does not play guitar. She is a very good piano player. She also dabbles on accordion and we jam together sometimes (haha, electric guitar with accordion is cool sometimes). Anyway, she said a few interesting things. She studies physics, psychology and neuroscience but she finds the guitar to be difficult (I find humor in that statement). She has tried guitar but there was not enough interest there to keep her playing. She says piano is so much easier and makes more sense to her.

She also says she finds acoustic guitar to speak to her more than electric. She finds it to be more of an emotional instrument. This reminded me of about 10 years ago when I was hanging out with one of my best friends and some girls we had just met. My best friend knew about 3 chords on an acoustic guitar and I knew how to play electric guitar a lot better than he knew how to play acoustic. The girls asked if we played guitar and I said I know how to play electric decently and my best friend said he knew how to strum a few chords on an acoustic. The girls lit up when he said acoustic and flocked to him "omg you play acoustic!?!?!?" kind of thing.

I find that to be an interesting observation in this discussion.

Funny thing is that a lot of the girls I know are like "Acoustic pansies. GIVE ME METAL!" LOL

My wife's into REM, Morrisey, Smiths, etc., which gives you kind of a mix.

I love when I'm playing an acoustic and anybody (guy or girl) is like, "I knew you could play electric guitar. I didn't know you knew how to play acoustic, too." as if they're different instruments.

I know a lot of girls like that too. Even my gf likes a lot of rock and hard rock music and she loves a lot of my harder rock songs I've written. She just finds something sweeter and more emotional about the acoustic guitar sometimes too.

Haha, yeah, that's always classic when somebody uses the "you play acoustic too?" bit! I will never understand how so many people seem to have the impression they are so different.

You should see what happens to people when I pick up a bass. LOL

I can't wait for the day when society in general realizes that men and women aren't THAT different. Do I expect a woman to be a linebacker for the Giants? No. Do I think any woman is equal to any man in capability of playing guitar? Yes. Part of it is interest, because not all men are interested in it either, but I do think that women have to deal with the stigma of guitar being a "man's instrument."

It's sad, because the women I know that play guitar are incredible. One of the most talented jazz guitarists I know is a woman named Patricia Tamburello.

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

My wife asked me to start teaching her. She quit pretty quick. She said she didn't enjoy it enough to practice the amount that needed to be done. Fair enough.

The way that CoA expresses himself in the public forum and in Private Messaging or invitation-only social groups could be two entirely different things.

Admins have the authority to view private communications. Who is to say that they are not passing on what they find to their Teflon-coated buddies?

Who is to say that Drex is not an Admin himself?

To my way of thinking, Ignore Lists are a private matter for the individual member. I wonder whether it is a breach of forum rules or etiquette to make and display screen grabs revealing this information? It certainly reflects rather badly on one member.

It's because an acoustic is bigger.

The really crazy thing is how wide of a rift their is between sheet music reading classical guitar players and every other kind of guitar player. Same number of strings, same tuning, worlds apart.

I do think that women have to deal with the stigma of guitar being a "man's instrument."

Women are often associated with parlor guitars, but even they tend to look like wood shop tools with their mostly clear wood stains and squared off head stocks and utilitarian tuning machines. Most of the women I've known to take interest in stringed instruments said they liked the idea of playing violin or cello, and they didn't bother to learn them (but who can blame them, I haven't either). If they could somehow make a guitar that looked like it could fit in with the rest of a big orchestra, and not be wedged in their like a guy with a Strat, I think that would have some appeal.

It looked like you were "adding on to the pile" one time, but your last few replies to my posts were genuine and constructive and so I'll admit it was a mistake to have put you on "ignore".

You're not on my ignore list, I'm not an unreasonable man.

There are plenty of archtop guitars that fit this bill. This one by Godin was like 600$ brand new.

Well, that's exactly my point. Why is any of that "wrong"? Why can't a girl look like this?

I see nothing inherently male/female in any of these pictures. I see nothing wrong with any of it. I see people enjoying an instrument and rocking out.

You're thinking in terms of "who's better?". The girls were thinking in terms of "who is more likely to play us a couple of songs". I have not touched an acoustic guitars for years now, but at a small social event I'd also prefer a guy with an acoustic entertaining others over... well... myself.

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

I'm kinda surprised I'm not on ignore, too. I've definitely given him guff in the past. Maybe because I tell him why he's wrong rather than just calling him an idiot?

No, I tried very hard to get along with DreX, but I was pissing uphill against the tide.

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

I like the fact that the screen grab illustrating extent of the Ignore List was created after I asked a perfectly reasonable question in a perfectly civil manner.

I am proud to be on DereX' ignore list.

Je Suis Ignorable.

Re: Why Aren't there More Female Guitar Players, Especially Electric?

Why does every thread that DreX posts in (even if he doesn't say something stupid) become about DreX? C'mon, guys. Ragging on him constantly is just as bad as the reasons he gives to be ragged upon.
