Re: Why did you get into SD pickups?

After uising EMG 81s exclusively for about 2 years, My CS Dinky came in with a TB-5 /SH-4 set, and the tone was huge and perfect...to this day that guitar has stayed unchanged, haven´t even tweaked the setup in almost 10 years....

I still use EMGs, but the EMG/ SD Ratio got thrown severely out of whack by that one ;)

Re: Why did you get into SD pickups?

Back in 2000 i bought a BC Rich NJ Neck-Thru Warlock and Mockingbird. I wanted the Warlock to scream and I wanted a more subtle sound for my Mockingbird. Having already had a ESP KH2 with EMG 81s I decided I would put the 81s in the Warlock and Semours in the Mockingbird. I looked around to see who I liked and what they played. Ultimately I ended up going with Dave Mustaine's setup, a TB4 in the bridge and a SH2 in the neck. I have to say as good as it sounded it was too muddy for me. It was way better than the stock pickups but as far as I was concerned it didn't touch my EMGs. Over the next couple years I ended up buying 3 USA Jacksons all with Seymours. They all had JBs and 2 had SH2 in the neck and 1 had a 59. I was never really thrilled with any of these guitars sounds as they were just too bassy. I thought it was just a condition of the pickup and was sure that effects or studio tweaking and what have you was why Mustaine could get such a nice sound. I sold 5 of my guitars just this past February/March. I ended up buying a USA BC Rich Bich Supreme and a USA BC Rich Mockingbird Archtop. They both had Seymours in them. I didn't really care what they had as I had been in search of affordable versions of these guitars forever. The Bich had a TB4 in the bridge and a 59 in the neck. When I got it I wasn't at all thrilled with them. I didnt know what I was gonna do. Two weeks later when I bought my Mockingbird it sounded AWESOME. Punchy, not too bassy, great articulation, the sound i had been searching for forever. I pulled the pickups out to see what they were and inside i found an SH2 in the bridge (big surprise, I actually always liked the SH2 just not the JB) and a Duncan Custom in the bridge. With a quickness I ordered the same pickups for my Bich and got them installed. Initially I hated them. But that turned out to be a condition of the full active electronics pacakge that was in the Bich. I bypassed all that and ran just straight through as if it wasn't installed. Then the TB5 died. Replaced it and all I can say is I want to sell my 2 Les Paul customs for 2 more BC Richs so I can throw some nice ducans in there.

After playing for 16 years and messing around with DiMarzios and EMG and stock Gibsons... I finally found the pickups I love. I can't put my guitars down anymore.

Re: Why did you get into SD pickups?

Re: Why did you get into SD pickups?

Mike Einziger was using a JB/Jazz, and although I didn't necessarily want to emulate his tone, I was looking for a pickup upgrade and figured that if he liked them, they're probably good. I later sold those off when I wanted to get a new guitar, but I just bought new ones for the other guitar (my #1).

Re: Why did you get into SD pickups?

personally, i was looking at EMG's, but than i looked into duncans and NEVER looked back.

Re: Why did you get into SD pickups?

I have found that Duncan pups give me the Tone I am looking for, and they use better quality parts than most aftermarket companys do. :smoker:

Re: Why did you get into SD pickups?

I don't even remember what it was, but I knew I wanted to improve the sound of my guitar.

Re: Why did you get into SD pickups?

my les paul had horrible stock pups , but i was thinkin its a les paul it should sound right , so i always blame it to the amp , i was thinkin for a long time that i needed to get me a new tube amp , but then i bought a schecter c1 and it came with duncan desingned , and i was blown away with the quality of the sound , so i started reserching about pickups and i found it about duncan designed and real duncans , so later i got me a set of sd for my paul

Re: Why did you get into SD pickups?

One of the first guitars I bought I got used, and it had a Screamin' Demon in the bridge. I was hooked at that point.

Re: Why did you get into SD pickups?

i got into SD's because of dave mustaine. i wanted a JB, but the store didnt have one, so i tried an invader, then a DD and found my favorite pickup ever. been a huge fan ever since

The Seymour Duncan User Group Forum did it. The tractor beam pulled me right in.

+1 i searched for awhile and debated which pickup company i wanted to use. My friend uses dimarzios but i just didn't think they were right for me. so i looked into this forum and BOOM! i found what i was lookin for.

Re: Why did you get into SD pickups?

When I was a teenager, I had a Charvel (black body, strathead maple neck) with a cream DiMarzio Super Distortion in it. I bought a used JB zebra and the guitar was FAR better.
Then I bought a Hotrails neck, which split in half, and was shocked that Duncan's Customer Service just sent me a new one! I knew they were a quality company, so I decided to support them from then on.

Since then, I've had about 1/3 of the product line in various guitars over the years, and now I've settled on my favorites.

Custom 5
CC
Seth Lovers
59's
JB
Surfers
Twangbanger
Hot Rail necks
JB Jr. neck

Re: Why did you get into SD pickups?

I got into SD's by chance and was just completely sold on the tone.

A friend of mine had bought an Ibanez complete with the purple paint job and he wanted pink pickups (hey, it was the 80's :) ). He really liked Jake E Lee and so he had gotten two SDS-1 DiMarzios and a JB for bridge. Of course, DiMarzio hot pink and SD pink aren't the same shade, so he got a pink X2N for bridge. I ended up with the JB, and I was blown away by the tone. I've tried lots of pickups, but end up going back to Duncans for humbuckers.

Re: Why did you get into SD pickups?

i voted others. i was an emg user back in my metal days. 85/60 and 85/sa/sa. when i grew out of metal. i when on to dimarzios as they are readily available here in singapore. found them a tad too mechanical if you get what i mean. its not really sterile. i guess you can call them soul-less. next up are duncans and i have not looked back since. i rest my case.

Re: Why did you get into SD pickups?

When I was a kid, Seymour Duncan's ads in the magazines and their product brochures always appealed to me. The ads looked a lot classier than those of the competition (still do). I have also always really liked how they seem to have a genuine reverence for vintage pickups and tones, and have tended to base their products on respect/appreciation for classic sounds. When the stock pickups on my Les Paul (this is a Gibson LP Custom) went microphonic  (I guess Gibson QC has been bad since the 90s), I let a local sales guy talk me into Tom Andersons. I was never happy with them, and switched 'em for a JB/'59 set with coil splits (hey, I was young and didn't have a single coil guitar!). I was very satisfied with the Duncans. I have subsequently purchased many other models, and have always been happy with them. The company always seemed to have an open, positive vibe, and a real commitment to its customers (e.g. the 21 day policy). Having met Seymour himself on several occasions (the man could not be any nicer nor more down-to-earth), and participated in the UGD, meeting so many employees and touring the factory, I can see that my instincts as a kid were dead on. Exceptional company, people, and products, and I am a customer for life.
