why do I have such an OCD with tuning?

Re: why do I have such an OCD with tuning?

It maybe also that its only when im in my room playing bymyself that this happens. When I play with other ppl/in a band setting, I dont even hear myself out of tune, even though i might be at times. It just might be that when I play by myself, im just too focused on only MY sounds, but when i play with a band, I focus on everyone

Re: why do I have such an OCD with tuning?

My friend calls it having "studio ears." Every time I play, I cant go for more then 5 minutes without having to pull out the tuner again and make my tuning spot on. Its not even bad out of tune, but it just bugs the crap out of me if its even a hair out of tune.

"studio ears" or not......im cursed lol :banghead:

Many years ago I had that issue...Basically this...

With new strings, make sure they are installed right, stretched in good...

After that, trust the guitar that it's in tune...Play,don't worry and have a great time..Any guitar is far from the perfect pitch playing instrument anyway..My guitars stay in tune and I check tuning again after a set break..

This seems like a good thread to partially hijack.

HOw tight should the nuts be (lol) on the tuners of a head stock?

I am tighten them as far as I can... Is this good or bad?

Tuners should be snug and never over-tightened!

Re: why do I have such an OCD with tuning?

Are you sure its always YOU thats out of tune? Is there another guitarist in your band? I know I sometimes had issues if our other guitar player was out of tune, I would hear it and think it was me.
And the problem was, his ear wasnt as good as mine, so he wouldnt hear himself being out of tune and so would do nothing about it. Then I would notice HIM being out and there would be a whole tuning episode where I would try and figure out WTF was going on and how come I was tuned fine with the bass player.

In our band and a very smart thing to do,is we all tune using my accurate as hell peterson strobe tuner...Not all of us are good ear trained tuners.. ;o) I prefer a tuner initially, and then if I'm slightly out later,I can normally dial the offending string(s) around...Normally my stuff stays in tune well..

Real important also,is a proper nut, maybe some nut sauce there also and I lubricate other string to metal friction areas..Sure doesn't hurt!

My rule of thumb is to use a socket wrench but without the wrench. Hand tighten then put the socket back in the wrench and tighten around 20 degrees.

Sounds like you need to see Dr. Newhart...

Re: why do I have such an OCD with tuning?

If your ears are good enough to hear its out of tune, why do you need to keep pulling out a tuner? Tune it by ear. :)

I typically tune it with my tuner and if a string goes flat while playing, I'll usually know which string it is and adjust that one by ear. Sometimes that's the only way to find "the sweet spot". Even with the strings intonated, I still find sometimes that a guitar can sound slightly off when reflected in tune, so between those two methods I usually find the right balance. How's that for OCD, huh? :D

Nothing OCD about that; that's the way you're supposed to tune. Use a tuner and make minor adjustents by ear.

Re: why do I have such an OCD with tuning?

When you buy a guitar, it's important to buy a tuned one.

Funnily enough, though, we've all seen the ebay/Craigslist adverts for guitars that say "In great condition although it needs tuned."

Re: why do I have such an OCD with tuning?

Myself and my bandmate really had to break ourselves of the habit of checking tuning between every song. It's an easy habit to get into and a hard one to break.

Re: why do I have such an OCD with tuning?

What if you took a T.O.M. string through body and put a Floyd neck w/ locking nut on it? Would that stay in tune pretty good?

Re: why do I have such an OCD with tuning?

without fine tuners you are kinda doomed
