Why do people like single cutaways?

Re: Why do people like single cutaways?

I have a Les Paul Black Beauty (single cut), an SG (double cut), a Jackson Soloist (double cut) and a Jackson RR (V, no cut!).
I don't understand how the single cut is supposed to be any worse in functionality? The Soloist is the best one for upper fret access. The RR and LP are the worst (not that it's any problem).
This is because the Soloist has thru-neck, the SG has an incredibly thin neck and joint, but the LP and RR have larger bolt on/set necks with larger neck to body joins which contribute much more to the "functionality".

So, again, I don't see what the issue is with single cutaways - it's completely irrelevant. More important IMO is the neck type and joint size.

Double cutaways just make soloing easier on the upper frets. I've seen weak joints on both singles and doubles, so I don't think it's necessarily accurate to say one is always better than the other. Some people just like being able to wrap their entire hand around the neck on the upper frets so that they can get a better handle on the notes - lots of players like Slash have managed to get by fine with singles.

I prefer DCs in terms of playability and aesthetic value, but I could be in the minority here.

i guess my Ibanez counts as a double cutaway, though they arent very deep, its like i dont have them...i will sat though, it feels alot different to play my strat down there than it does my ibanez or tele.

Re: Why do people like single cutaways?

i don't think a strat is a double cutaway guitar. its more like a tele with a horn for the strap button for improving the balance which is the real purpose of Leo. not for easier upper fret access.

Well, the single-cut guitars have tone and sustain. And it really isn't that hard to play in the upper register of a Les Paul.

Re: Why do people like single cutaways?

For me personally, i just like the look of a LP.

I like the tone of a mahogany LP too and of course there are downsides with it like there are with any guitar, but there isn't 1 guitar that can do everything, and if i were to buy a GLP, it wouldn't be to rip out 4-octave sweep arpeggios- i have my RG for that.

There's a tuning stability problem on some of the GLP's i've played which i haven't had on any other guitar, but the pros far outweigh te cons IMO. Stick some Duncans in a GLP & you have TONE, TONE, TONE!

It's a sacrifice of functionality. I don't get it.

Using Les Paul style guitars as an example, single cutaway LP's sounds better than double cutaway LP's: deeper and more lower mids.
