Why do so many people have huge amps?

Re: Why do so many people have huge amps?

Yeah, a guy with a really little amp made up that nugget. Doesn't make it true

Its really more about the girth. Of the amp. And the fingering technique. And another veiled sexual innuendo.

HOW TRUE !!!

Ok, that's just hilarious!

Re: Why do so many people have huge amps?

The only thing dumber than needlessly obsessing about your gear is needlessly obsessing about someone else's gear.

If a small amp works for you, you win.

Real chick? OR.... visual kei trap @ his finest???

(no comment on pic until I know for sure. Lol.)

Re: Why do so many people have huge amps?

Because I like to play really loud. But I do not do so at the house. Only at the jam room and at gigs. And with two 80s Peavey Butchers on tap in full stack configurations, I can get REALLY loud (no pic of that, need to take one - I use some of my 4x12s as PA monitor stands). Seems like every time I buy a head, some old cab comes with it.

step away from the chans, man. Traps are for catching pigs.
I wish there were some cheesecake pics of her, but she's not down with that apparently.

I'm not sure she's down with much. I'm not sure she's human. She may be wind-up.

Love angled speakers like that Sunn.. My Traynor cab 2x12 with greenbacks is like that sounds wicked. Nice collection!

For me it's simple. The big bad wolf can't blow this mo-fo down. I like my castle LOUD.

Re: Why do so many people have huge amps?

Most of the large rigs i've seen in the last 20 years go back and forth between home and rehearsal rooms in the family sedan. No doubt only a small portion of those ever see a stage.

If you're young, your bands may have a small scene of venues where you can play loudly with big rigs. But if you continue, you tend to find yourself in venues with strict noise regulations where the big rigs cannot 'do their thing', and smaller amps will do the job better and get you invited back to play again. Unless of course you get lucky and your band is able to play only large venues, in which case, go for it !

And sadly there's also the 'image' aspect that most people get sucked into. But if you're all about that, there's something wrong ... people are supposed to be seeing and hearing you play, not looking at your amp.

There's a pretty famous image of the back of Mayhem's wall of Marshalls, which are set dressing walls to hide an active Engl and a backup Engl running to the soundboard.

What up Jack! Been a looooooong time brother! We are all over on FB now in a group called "First Church of Amplifier Worship" you need to come join us! https://www.facebook.com/groups/514785631880684/

I re-did my sig since I was here last and almost everything had changed lol! I play Yamaha SG guitars pretty exclusively these days and now am playing 80s Peavey Butcher amps and pushing them with my original, first run Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh that we all gave Mark orders for before he was even a company! And he's doing great, that company has really blown up! Looks like I'm buying a red knob Sunn Model T halfstack though tomorrow lol. So, nothing has changed, always buying new stuff and selling the rest!

Fuzz is doing awesome, just played out biggest show to date, opened for Crowbar this past weekend and it was an awesome experience, great crowd response. I think since we last spoke, things have gone really well for us - we've done shows with Saint Vitus, Kill Devil Hill, Eyehategod, Honky, David Allen Coe, Rigor Mortis, and jeez, more than I can think of at the moment. And we just got a killer write up TODAY on the Ripple Music web site: https://www.facebook.com/groups/514785631880684/

All anybody needs to know is that the name of our last EP was RITUAL VOLUME. lol

Re: Why do so many people have huge amps?

In my never ending search for the perfect amp that I can play at home I've never understood how so many of you are using 100w high gain tube heads and 4x12 cabs, etc. Either you guys are all gigging guitarists and need the watts, or you are playing in homes with no wife/kids/neighbors and you wear earplugs. What gives? Because what I thought would be my perfect amp (Marshall Class 5) was still too loud once I got it home!

I record mostly, so I'm not really playing the 100 watters at home. For recording, when a microphone gets that close to the speakers (where your ears will never be) all the warts and details are magnified, so it has to be the best. The big amps are needed for "that" tone - though it is possible to get there with lower power amps as long as the schematic architecture is similar and the tubes in use are the same. (e.g. you can't mimic a 4 x EL34 amp using 2 x EL84s or 2 x 6V6s, but you can get that tone using a 1 x EL34 amp)

Speakers, however, are engineered to have a certain amount of air space behind them. 4x12 cabs provide the correct amount of air space, which in turn provides the correct amount of dampening (for Celestion speakers anyway), which impacts their frequency response and tone. So even with a smaller amp the big box cabinet would be advisable (though not required.)

When I do play at home, with high power amps I use a Weber MASS to take it down to bedroom volume. If not that, then I'm practicing using a SansAmp PSA-1 through a Fender Champion 600 or Vox AC30, or going straight in to a Line 6 Flextone.
