I think so. The bullet and affinity are this close to being pro. I love the sound of basswood. They still sound good upgraded. The only drawbacks I notice are the thickness of the body and the hardware material.

Large makers have no time to be doing small runs of product that will cost more yet make them less money.
Small builders and the custom makers are very suited to this - but then you will truly pay what a small run costs.

I don't know why SD or another aftermarket doesn't offer replacement boards for say Les Paul's with all different options and pickups to go with them that have the quick connects like Gibby puts in their guitars.

It is what it is. Mainstream guitar companies dictate what they are going to put out. If you want a custom guitar, go to a custom guitar builder and you'll get exactly what you want.

Wow, I guess I struck a nerve. Lol
And yes, I'm well aware of Warmoth, Precision Guitar Kits, and several others. I just want to be able to buy a Gibson, for example, without the electronics. And I always try a guitar out unplugged, because if it doesn't sound good unplugged, I don't want it.
And this just popped into my when I started agonizing over whether to swap the Burstbucker Pros out of my new Les Paul or not. It's not something I seriously am demanding. It's just one of those "what if?" things.
Why would it cost them more? They would just skip the electronic install part. It would save them parts and labor costs.

It would save them a handful of dollars and result in less than $100 difference at retail. There is zero chance of them doing that for something less than 1% of customers want. You're actually better off selling the components that you don't want than what you are proposing.

As long as there is Warmoth, or companies like it, I don't need to get a 'genuine' body or neck from the big companies. But I do think it is silly to spend $3k on a guitar and it doesn't have the electronics that you want. I vote for 'spec' out your expensive guitar with exactly the options you want, so you don't have to change anything.

Actually almost every car company does give you an option to buy the car with basic steel wheels instead of more costly alloys...

But thing is, it would increase the variety of products they're putting out, which has a tendency to increase costs and lower efficiency. And they would have to sell them cheaper, so they wouldn't win anything there, even then they wouldn't be able to compete with companies like Warmoth.

On eBay and Reverb you can order gibsons and American fenders without the electronics and that in them... I was thinking of getting getting one.. or get a left handed strat body with a right handed neck on it. I just go on either site and search "fender body neck" if I'm looking for a guitar without the hardware.

That's not really the same thing as buying a car without wheels, is it? In guitar terms it's more like buying a guitar with a basic, functional set of pickups and electronics that you can choose to swap out or not.

Part outs, mostly from Stratosphere. I've debated doing an LP studio, V or Explorer through them, as a blacked out version.

I used to think along the same lines, I agree to a point with you. When I bought my Traditional I knew before I touched it I would be changing the pickups. I fought with the 57s as long as I could before I put in the WLHs. Now the guitar is my No. 1. Same with my B. C. Rich I knew the wiring was going to be a total gut job along with the pickups. Now the guitar is exactlly the way I want it and I love it.
