Re: Why don't guitar manufacturers offer guitars without electronics?

I realize it probably wouldn't be the biggest seller, but if your like me and tend to like pickups that aren't commonly offered from the factory, a guitar without electronics would be a blessing. I'm talking about guitars that are built, not parts or a kit.

Just a thought........

The electronics are probably a very small part of the cost for the manufacturer. Personally, I like the left over spare parts I get out of the whole deal.

Re: Why don't guitar manufacturers offer guitars without electronics?

Has the reason for this not happening been thoroughly addressed or am I need?

We've talked about false economy, economics of scale, consumer buying habits, and the nuances of the guitar market. I don't know how much there is left to do.

Carvin (yeah kiesel now whatever lol) comes real close in that they build some very "precise" high-quality guitars and offer you the option of sending in your own and/or having the house-pups installed for next-to-nothing. (sure it's built-into the price, but it's very little).

I don't believe they are doing this anymore. I could be wrong though.

Guitar makers don't want you to change parts. So why would they sell a guitar without electronics?

You can get Gibson shells from The Stratosphere/Gibsondependable on ebay. And of course Fender too.......if simply buying something like this is the point of your thread.

Why? Just more market for them to sell their stuff?

Re: Why don't guitar manufacturers offer guitars without electronics?

That's not really the same thing as buying a car without wheels, is it? In guitar terms it's more like buying a guitar with a basic, functional set of pickups and electronics that you can choose to swap out or not.

Well, is there a company that allows you to choose pickups? I mean, guitars are generally sold solid: Model A, Model B etc... If you want Model A with Model B pickups, it's custom shop...

With quick connect system, it would be very easy and doable to give buyer an option to switch pickups at the shop at the purchase with very reasonable extra cost if any.

How so? Fender sells guitars with their pickups. They would make less money selling a guitar with no pickups. They also sell replacement pickups.

As a guitar maker, I put the pickups I think work best with the guitar.

I actually meant why would they care? Since you said they don't want you to change parts. And they sell aftermarket parts too...

Partly because new guitars are under warranty. They would have a customer service nightmare if they allowed people to swap out parts. Obviously modding your new guitar voids the warranty.

The reason they sell aftermarket pickups is because there's now a market for that. But there wasn't before DiMarzio, Bartolini, and Duncan started it. So for instance the Strat was designed with Leo's pickups. So that's how it was sold.

And the reason you have companies like Warmoth, Mighty Mite, etc., is so people can mid their guitars. Back then there weren't even aftermarket parts. So you would maybe get an exotic wood neck or body.

Based on the "electronics" that some guitars ship with, they pretty much don't come with any already ...
