Why don't more players use P90's?

I played my Melody Maker Sunday with a band and man! whatta tone! I cut through really nicely! All of the balls of a humbucker with much of that single coil sweetness. I guess it made me wonder why more players don't choose P90's. Any thoughts as to why?

Re: Why don't more players use P90's?

I've never played one with P-90's. But I'd like to...........
I think it's got to do with P-90 guitars being made in smaller numbers.........just a thought!

Re: Why don't more players use P90's?

I think they're probably as popular as ever, if not moreso!

I see an awful lot of P90 guitars.

I agree...

In fact, I believe that P-90s', more than humbuckers' tone really can be shaped by the fingers.

Re: Why don't more players use P90's?

I think alot of it has to do with availability.

it seems like in the past few years there's been an explosion of them in the market. Previously I think the offerings were also typically very vintage-sounding. There were some "hot" models here and there but typically the market was mostly vintage.

I've owned two sets, Vintage Vibe and GFS'. The Vintage Vibe were fantastic sounding but the hum drove me utterly bat****. The GFS' are DAMNED quiet and a little bit hotter than I'm used to. I find with some work of the volume knob I can cover more ground that just about anything else in my arsenal.

It's a great time to be a player....

Re: Why don't more players use P90's?

I love P-90's! I think everybody wants a P-90 axe they just don't know it. However - see my latest few P-90 threads on some of pain and sorrow associated with that sound: Fit, adjustability, etc....

Re: Why don't more players use P90's?

The first seven songs on my soundclick were written and recorded entirely with my P-90 Gibby Junior except for a lead here and there.

Also the 9th and 10th songs.

Re: Why don't more players use P90's?

I love P-90s but ultimately I had to go to buckers because I can't have that much noise in my rig, we're talking about more noise than a very good noise gate can handel.

Re: Why don't more players use P90's?

I have an ES-135 with p90s and it sings man. i never liked it before but now i think my tonal tastes are maturing and i find it to be a sweet sweet clean sound. With lots of gain they are fat all the way up the neck and arent that noisy to me. im GASing for an lp jr. like Leslie West :)

Do you have any clips of that es-135? Would love to hear it with p-90's.

Because ... as in the immortal words of my Father In Law..... (Thick Dutch Accent) .... "THEY JUST DON'T KNOW!!!!!"

Re: Why don't more players use P90's?

Simple answer from me. I don't have a guitar to slap any in and can't afford to get one with 'em right now. ;)

There's only 2 guitars I'd want with a P-90:

1 - Gibson SG Jr. (like the one I had 12 years ago...I miss that one)
2 - Gibson Les Paul Jr.

Given a choice between the 2, I'd probably grab the SG Jr. every time. The one I had looked just like Jake E. Lee's white one, only mine was cherry red and it was from the 80's. I cannot find any info on the 80's models anywhere, not even on EverythingSG.com. Part of me wants to say it had a TOM/Stop Tail on it but I can't remember for sure. That was one great sounding guitar.

Re: Why don't more players use P90's?

I just set up my pups to split for that p-90 sound .also love that Phat Cat sound ,I restored an Ovation Viper for a friend that has 90's and you all are right it just cuts right through, thinking about getting one myself

Re: Why don't more players use P90's?

I had a 1975 Les Paul '55 Special, and while I loved the tone of that guitar, noise was a problem. Even with having the electronics sheilded, in some situations it could be unbearable.

I read an interview with Seth Lover where he stated that he was going for P-90 tone when he designed the PAF humbucker. I love PAFs, but I haven't heard one that has that raunchy, gritty tone of a good P-90.

The other pickup out there that I find interesting is the mini-humbucker found on the original Epiphones and the Les Paul Deluxe. One of the reviews of the LP Deluxe (in the Musician's Friend catalog) stated that he loved the mini-'bucker because it gave a thicker sound than a Strat-type single coil, yet it still had some clarity and cut. I thought that review was spot on.

So my question is, why aren't the mini-humbuckers more popular?

Whatever the reason, we should all be grateful for the pioneers of this industry who designed those great guitars, amps and pickups decades ago; and also give thanks to the guys like Duncan, DiMarzio, Lawrence, et. al., who carried that torch and created a market that literally offers something for everyone.

Re: Why don't more players use P90's?

Noise is the only reason to avoid P90's. They do have a chainsaw grind in the bridge and a woodiness in the neck that only a few humbuckers can match.

Been gassin' for a LP jr for some time now......

Re: Why don't more players use P90's?

P90's are fine unless you are using high-gain rigs. When the groovy 70's-80's era came along and everybody wanted to imitate their shag-headed heros (where are they now?) and sound like a 98 lb. bee in a bottle, the mfgs didn't make many P90 guitars. When the vintage thang really got going in the mid-90's, people wanted them again...same as it ever was.
