Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

I think I know this one...

....because the are broke?

I think a lot of people -- younger people especially -- shop at thrift stores and the Salvation Army because they like stuff that's old and rare. Kind of like Eugene picking up that old acoustic in the pawnshop just because he thought it looked beat up.

The frame of mind required to prevent your guitar from ever taking damage is not worth the extra money if I ever want to sell it.

not entirely true i buy cheap clothes and mid range guitars cuz i have bills, don't play or work on instruments for a living, and make a low wage. if i could i would try to make money off music but in this area..... i digress. basically i think if you pay for it then it is yours to abuse or worship as you like. granted i don't understand buying a $2000 guitar an not putting it in a case but i currently would have to pay more than my guitar was to buy to get a case for its shape so to each there own. how ever if i did work on instruments for a living i wouldn't complain about having a customer fix a guitar. you dont know its story or anything one time i met a guy who bragged about owning a NEVER BEEN PLAYED les paul..... AND NEVER PLAYING IT! that's scary

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

My #1 is a top shelf instrument.

My #2 is a mid- range axe.

BOTH get wiped before returning to the case. I take care of my equipment.

Yet I don't obsess over them. Last week at worship team rehearsal I knocked over a monitor station near my #1. Somebody said, "I think it hit your guitar. Aren't you gonna check it?"

Me: "No. If it did hit it, checking won't change it."

The good news is it did not hit it.

I care for my tools, but they're tools. I wouldn't have lost sleep if I had damaged it. Worrying wouldn't change it.

That said, I discovered last week that my #1 has appreciated in value. So the investment was wise both monetarily and because I like the guitar.

I will say that the finish is nearly as nice as it looks in my sig., and that pic is 5 years old.

And no, I do not comprehend the appeal of a relic'd axe.

I see this is your 2nd post, welcome to the forum. I have worn thrift show clothing and played many inexpensive guitars. I got no attitude about what anyone plays or wears. This is just us, being us and having some fun with each other. The guy in your story by the way is a way too common story. There are too many collectors out there driving up the prices for us real musicians.

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

Would it have been more effective if I'd hotlinked it instead?

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

I tried to post the That's Racist gif because of Securb's anti-Macchio sentiment.

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

I thought you were going to post that it would have been more effective if I'd hotlinked my face.

He's got a cute daughter. Looks just like him. And I kinda wish one of those things weren't true.

I'm man enough to say I'd mate with a young Steve Vai-looking female. He's kind of a barfly skinny chick.

off u see did MRSAge, I m on tapa talk and auto correct is hating on me

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

Why don't people take care of thier instruments? That's because there is a disturbing trend of musicians leaving their guitars out on the lawn or in trees even.

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

The main two reasons I see are ignorance (don't know) or apathy (don't care).

I've never seen either trait being displayed be an experienced player.

There's a difference between being beat up/worn/used looking but still in great playing condition and just neglect. The former may or may not have some dings, worn paint, or scratches, but it will have fresh strings, clean frets and neck, electronics that work, properly set up and intonated, etc. Ready to go for a gig at any given time. The latter probably has action a mile high, a warped neck, strings that will give you tetanus, doesn't hold tune, a layer of grease on the body that needs a sandblaster to remove, etc.
