Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

There's a difference between being beat up/worn/used looking but still in great playing condition and just neglect. The former may or may not have some dings, worn paint, or scratches, but it will have fresh strings, clean frets and neck, electronics that work, properly set up and intonated, etc. Ready to go for a gig at any given time. The latter probably has action a mile high, a warped neck, strings that will give you tetanus, doesn't hold tune, a layer of grease on the body that needs a sandblaster to remove, etc.

You forgot the cat using it as a scratching post...

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

Why don't people take care of thier instruments? That's because there is a disturbing trend of musicians leaving their guitars out on the lawn or in trees even.

Thanks Beau it is nice to start the day with a hearty laugh.

You know what I could care less what anyone does to their guitar. I don't have to play it and I don't have to buy it. I look at this as the equivalent of getting frustrated if your neighbor doesn't wash and maintain their car. Who cares you don't have to drive it. They can take it to a demolition derby if they would like. Some of the posts in this thread are humorous, SOME of you guys act like abusing a guitar is akin to abusing a pet. It is a piece of wood and if it is not your piece of wood don't worry about it.

Are you suggesting that people shouldn't take precautions when abusing their wood? :naughty:

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

Always find it kind of crazy when someone has issues with taking care of an instrument. Might go back to my early start in music and not being able to afford a horn that was acceptable (5k for a top of the line French Horn or even Trumpet). I guess once I figured out that I could improve my gear by taking care of it properly and maintaining it (mods too) I started a whole new path in my musical life. Now I have more and better gear then I have ever had and it all works properly 100% of the time .

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

I think someone needs some intervention over at TGP. I'm not going to name names, so this screenshot is obscuring the obvious marks of identity for purposes of this forum, but it should be easy find the post over there.

He's a heck of a player and a guitar builder - so please educate.

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

One of the most beautiful guitars I've seen was Dime's old Baby Blue lightning bolt Dean... Beat to hell, but that guitar could tell stories.

I'm man enough to say I'd mate with a young Steve Vai-looking female. He's kind of a barfly skinny chick.

Hey, it's a possibility too. I'm pretty low on the Kinsey scale so there really can't be any of them male bits on the front. Other than that...she'd be kind of moped girl, but it's not like I'm a catch either.

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

Regarding not wanting to wipe the strings down, I can relate to that for a couple reasons. If I don't see the dirt and grime, psychologically I have a hard time believing it's there. I know it is, but I'm full of doubts, if I wipe it down it will look no more clean or dirty the next moment. Of course months later I'll see a buildup of grime and oxidation and clearly see that, but in the mean time...

The other thing is, if I wash greasy or oily dishes, I have to use dish soap to cut the grease. If I were to just rub it with a cloth, I'd just smear the oil around, and wouldn't come up. Does wiping the strings and guitar down actually remove grime and skin oil, or it just being evenly distributed over the entire surface area, making the guitar superficially appear clean?

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

it comes down to the player's preference. i wipe my guitars down after playing, but some don't. i noticed strings last longer when wiped after each session.

I'm not a gigging musician, so I'm assuming their procedures would be different than mine.

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

^+1

A dry "string cleaner" cloth (no idea if its treated with anything) helps the most, IMO. Under and over - You'll eventually wind up ripping the cloth.

The strings lose a little tone (again, IMO) if you use a liquid like Naptha to clean your strings. YMMV.

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

I see this is your 2nd post, welcome to the forum. I have worn thrift show clothing and played many inexpensive guitars. I got no attitude about what anyone plays or wears. This is just us, being us and having some fun with each other. The guy in your story by the way is a way too common story. There are too many collectors out there driving up the prices for us real musicians.

thanks i am super new here posted awhile back but now actually have time to keep up with this stuff yay! lol

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

I have a buddy I see every couple of years and he's got a Schecter "diamond series" (I think that's what it's called) les paul shape. It's a fairly nice guitar. He almost never plays it and every time I come to his house I'll pick it up and the intonation will be way off. Strings will be old. On top of that he has some old crappy Crate amp that sounds like ****. I try to tell him he'd be more inspired by his rig to play if he did a few simple things to keep the guitar up, and to get a decent amp that he can get good tones out of. I've tried to show him how to do a simple setup but he just isn't interested.

As for my own guitars. I like to keep my stuff nice. I maintain their setup, keep the strings relatively fresh, don't let dust build up, and I try really hard to keep them free of dings. As much as anything I want to preserve the resale value of the instrument in the event i'd ever like to sell any of them. I don't gig so that stuff is pretty easy to stay on top of. I'd like to be playing with other people but I just don't know anybody where I live that plays, craigslist is a nightmare to find people to play with, and i'm just not plugged into the scene in general.

My #1 is all dinged up, but the frets and fretboard are clean, it's got new Dunlop strings, it's intonated and plays/sounds like it should.

A friend of mine has an Am Std Strat and Telecaster and I swear my Allparts Strat plays and sounds better only because he doesn't do a damn thing for them.
Old strings, gunky frets, pickups stupidly high and all of that ****.

I once set his Telecaster for him, gave it a good clean-up, fretboard lubing, fret polishing, intonation/action/neck relief, the whole deal. He was like a kid with a new toy afterwards. OH GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW GOOD THIS IS, IT PLAYS SO SMOOTHLY AND SOUNDS FANTASTIC.

...And he went straight back to his old habits. Some people just don't get it.

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

I once owned a 70s Gibson USA LP Custom that was beat beyond hell and back - huge pieces of finish missing, back of the neck had been sanded down to the wood, binding missing in chunks all over and touched up with what looked like Krylon, Liquid Paper, and housepaint, had a middle humbucker route added, but the fretboard and frets looked like it had just come from the factory.

Serial number was 11111. I shoulda kept it.

Re: Why don't people take care of thier instruments?

I've always been real protective of my guitars and tried to keep them as clean and new as possible, probably comes from growing up kind of poor and knowing I wouldn't be getting a new guitar any time soon. I make it a point to wash my hands before I play, it seems to get a little more life out of my strings and I can't stand when someone hands you their guitar to play and you're like wtf is this and why is it sticky? lmfao

I don't know, I think that's more of an excuse for the average guy (most guys aren't full-time musicians on the road). Players tend to sweat more onstage, between the lights, amps giving off heat, dancers, people in the crowd etc, and that's all the more reason for me to wipe down/polish my guitars when I get home. I don't want them feeling nasty for next time or corroding. A lot of guys lean their guitars against their amps when they're on break, and it's pretty easy for them to get banged into or knocked over by bandmates clambering back onstage (all the more so when they've had a few drinks). Guitars stands aren't any better. At break, I put my guitars back in their hard cases. Only takes seconds.

Ah, it's nice to relive a classic.

Depends on how big of a stage you have. Most of the ones I was on were already occupied by the house band's gear that we had to set up around, and the only place to put a case was behind the P.A.

Couldn't lay it on top of my amp or behind it without shearing off a speaker cable, or resting it against their gear.

Otherwise, there was the pinball machines, which were in use, or the jukebox, which had a sloped top. Only place for my case was in a corner behind something, and it took more than just a few seconds to get it out.
